GENERATION ONE
Optimus Prime was once known as Orion Pax and, like his offical cartoon counterpart, was a dock worker along with his friends Dion and Ariel. After a dangerous attack made by the Decepticons left Orion injured, he was repaired into a new body by Alpha Trion. He then became a soldier serving in the Autobot military.
During the early days of the war, Orion was present at the battle that saw the death of Sentinel Prime at the hands of the evil Megatron. As he died, Sentinel passed the Matrix of Leadership on to Orion, naming him Optimus Prime.
When the war had depleted Cybertron of its energy, Optimus set out to find more, taking a crew of Autobots with him. The Decepticons took pursuit and the two factions crash landed on Earth, where, four million years later, their war would start anew.
Optimus Prime would lead the Autobots through many events throughout the Earth War, including the rise of Unicron, the Chaos Bringer, and the Ark's takeover by the Decepticons led by Galvatron. The valiant heroes finally saw their peace when Galvatron's invention, the Space Bridge, turned against him, and all of the Decepticons were locked up inside it.
Years later, after the Autobots had constructed a new base, the Decepticons managed to break free and led an attack on the city. Optimus protected the base against the titanic 'gestalt' Bruticus, who crushed Optimus with his bare hands. Just as Prime was on the brink of dying, the Matrix saved and rebuilt him into a new body, renaming him Nova Prime.
After this battle, Galvatron regathered his forces and soon launched an even larger assault. Despite the Autobots' best efforts, they were forced to retreat to Cybertron. Once there, the Autobot High Council declared Nova unfit to lead and replaced him with Rodimus Prime. Angered by this, Nova deserted the Autobots, plotting his revenge.
When Nova next appeared, he had fallen to the dark side and was preparing to unleash the Liege Maximo, one of the first Thirteen Transformers. During these events, Nova's two personas--his 'Optimus' aspect and his 'Nova' aspect--split from each other, creating two separate beings. The original Optimus Prime took back leadership of the Autobots and helped defeat Nova Prime, the Liege Maximo, and the Decepticons.
Years later, the war would begin again, and Optimus led his Autobots against Megatron's forces once more. It finally came to a chaotic conclusion, which resulted in Optimus sacrificing his life to destroy Megatron. It is presumed that Rodimus succeeded him after his death.
