Charles Xavier (Professor X)

Birth date: July 15th, 1968

Charles Francis Xavier was born to the nuclear researcher Dr. Brian Xavier and his wife Sharon. Charles was actually intended to be a twin, but his sibling died in childbirth, although the doctors were supposedly confounded by the circumstances surrounding it. When Charles was nine years old, his father was killed in an explosion during a failed experiment. His mother ended up remarrying to Brian Xavier’s colleague, Dr. Kurt Marko, who was more interested in the Xaviers’ wealth than actually showing Sharon any love.

When Dr. Marko moved in, he brought with him his son from a previous marriage Cain. Bigger and older than Charles, Cain Marko relentlessly bullied his younger stepbrother. When Charles turned thirteen, his latent mutant powers fully manifested when he unexpectedly read Cain’s mind, in turn learning that his stepbrother was being abused by Kurt Marko. Cain sensed the invasion into his mind and came to resent Charles even more from that day on.

Sharon Xavier would eventually pass away due to heartbreak from the abuses Kurt Marko heaped on her, and Dr. Marko himself would succumb to injuries sustained while rescuing Charles and Cain from a fire. With the brothers left to fend for themselves, Charles managed to get ahead of his peers thanks to his advanced intellect and graduated from Harvard University at the age of 16, eventually earning his PhD at Oxford. While at Oxford, he met and became close to a woman named Moira Kinross and the two eventually married.

It was around this time that Charles became concerned about the future for mutant-kind and sought to find a better future for them. This led him to cross paths with Erik Lehnsherr, a mutant with his own radical ideas for the future. The two men bonded over their shared vision and Charles ended up leaving Moira and their son David in order to spend more time outlining his and Erik’s plans, which culminated with the establishment of the Brotherhood of Mutants. Upon moving the Brotherhood to the Savage Land, however, Erik became increasingly more radical and violent, expressing his desire to raise an army of mutants and wage war against mankind. Charles rejected this idea and tried to persuade Erik into pursuing a more peaceful path. When his friend refused to listen to reason, Charles ended up leaving the Brotherhood along with a small group of followers and returned to the United States. By this point, Moira had already remarried and his son David had become estranged to him.

Hoping to turn his life around, Charles remodeled his family’s estate and established a school that would take in children who had recently discovered their mutant powers. Among his first students was a girl named Jean Grey, whose own mutant powers reminded Charles much of his own. Before long, the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters had become a safe haven for mutant children (and adults) from across the world.

Unfortunately, peace did not last long for Xavier and his students, as in the year 2000 the Brotherhood of Mutants, led by Xavier’s former friend Erik (now calling himself Magneto) led a campaign to abduct Senator Robert Kelly after he had announced his intentions to pass the Mutant Registration Act, which Magneto perceived to be a prejudiced and theocratic bill. While Senator Kelly was eventually rescued from the Brotherhood’s clutches, it sparked a nationwide distrust for mutants and led to Bolivar Trask’s prototype Sentinels being deployed. The Sentinels’ scanners led them to Xavier’s school and the drones proceeded to attack the estate. Fortunately, Xavier’s students were able to use their powers to defeat the Sentinels and prevent much damage from being done to the school, although Xavier was left crippled when a Sentinel shot him near the spine. While doctors were able to save him, he was left without the use of his legs and bound to a wheelchair.

Following the incident, Xavier’s students convinced him that they needed a better means of defending themselves as anti-mutant attacks were only going to continue; not only that, but they needed a way to counter the Brotherhood’s actions and prove that not all mutants meant ill will. Thus, the X-Men—a team of young and gifted superheroes—were formed.

Jean Grey

Birth date: October 27, 1983

The youngest daughter of Professor John Grey and his wife Elaine, Jean Grey grew up near Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson. When she was ten years old, her best friend Annie Richardson was hit by a car and the tragic event awakened Jean’s latent mutant powers, causing her mind to empathetically link with that of her dying friend. The experience rendered Jean depressed and inconsolable, leading to her psychiatrist to recommend Professor Charles Xavier, who had recently opened a school for gifted youngsters. After meeting with Professor Xavier, Jean’s parents agreed to leave her in his care.

Xavier was eventually able to help Jean through her trauma and she later accompanied him in his search for other mutant children in need. When the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters officially opened up for the first time, Jean’s parents agreed to enroll her.

Steve Rogers (Captain America)

Birth date: July 4, 1918

If there is one thing that the Avengers, the Adventure Team, and pretty much any would-be vigilante you can name have in common is that they owe their existence to one man: Captain Steve Rogers—or, as he’s more well-known these days, Captain America.

Once a simple kid from Brooklyn, young Steve Rogers was brought onto Project Rebirth by Dr. Abraham Erskine, who was impressed by the boy’s refusal to stand down to bullies despite his small and frail nature. Colonel Chester Phillips was not as impressed but humored the doctor nonetheless, giving the approval to subject Rogers to the Super-Soldier Serum. While the operation proved to be a success, Erskine was assassinated by agents of the Nazi organization Hydra not long after. With the serum lost, the plan to create more super-soldiers was abandoned and Rogers was assigned to mascot duties. Unwilling to stand by and do nothing, Rogers led an effort to rescue the captured members of the Howling Commandos from Hydra captivity, in the process rescuing his old friend Bucky Barnes. Impressed by his efforts, the government promoted Rogers to the rank of captain and he quickly became known as “Captain America”.

Captain America went on to lead a number of successful missions for the Allies, focusing most of his efforts on defeating Hydra and its affiliates. Along with the Howling Commandos, he was known to have fought alongside the likes of Sgt. Savage and the Screaming Eagles, and was considered the unofficial leader of the so-called “Six American Warriors,” a team of vigilantes that had been inspired by Captain America to don unique uniforms of their own.

His adventures came to a tragic end however when, on March 1st, 1945, Captain America sacrificed himself to prevent Hydra from destroying the United States with the Valkyrie bomber plane, crashing it in an ice field. Believed to be dead, Captain America was commemorated for his sacrifice and became an inspiration for many soldiers to come, including Joe Colton and the Adventure Team.

In truth, however, Captain America had in fact survived the crash of the Valkyrie as, at the turn of the century, his frozen form was discovered by operatives of SHIELD and he was thawed out of the ice, his cryogenic preservation confounding even the most brilliant of scientists. The passage of five decades brought quite the culture shock to Steve Rogers, who had lost many loved ones in the intervening years. He quickly overcame his shock and accepted Director Fury’s offer to join the Avengers Initiative.

Tony Stark (Iron Man)

    Birth date: May 29th, 1970

    Tony Stark would likely still be your typical selfish rich playboy had a brush with death not changed his tune. The only child of successful businessman Howard Stark, Tony was practically born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Graduating from MIT at the age of seventeen, he was pretty much set for life with it being all but guaranteed for him to inherit his father's fortune, which did ultimately happen... if a bit sooner than expected.

    Stark had only just entered adulthood when his parents were killed in a tragic car accident. Upon inheriting Stark Industries, he became a bit of recluse for a time, letting his friend and mentor Obadiah Stane call the shots while he got over his grief. Once he had recovered, he took over the business and pushed it to even greater heights with his inventive mind, quickly making a name for himself. Before long, Stark Industries had become the number one arms supplier for the United States government.

    Naturally, this made Stark Industries a target for a number of terrorist organizations, among them Cobra and Hydra. However, it was the Ten Rings that made the first move, ambushing Stark during a demonstration and taking him hostage. The initial blast nearly killed him but his life was saved by the innovative nature of the Ten Rings' captive scientist Ho Yinsen, who installed a miniaturized arc reactor to protect his heart. With the help of Yinsen, Stark constructed a suit of armor which he used to break out of the Ten Rings' facility, although Yinsen died in the attempt to escape.

    After returning home, Stark - having realized the impact his inventions had on the world - decided to steer the company in a different direction, focusing on helping people rather than endanger them. This enraged Obadiah Stane, who had in fact been the one who had sold out Stark to the Ten Rings so that he could take full control of the company, and he sought to once again remove Stark from the company so that he could maintain their deal with the government. 

    By this point, Stark had perfected his own armor design, becoming the metal hero Iron Man. Stane then found his schematics and used them to construct his own suit of armor, creating the massive Iron Monger. Stane intended to send this armor to the Ten Rings so they could properly destroy Stark with it, but when his plans were uncovered, he decided to don the armor for himself and proceeded to clash with the Iron Man. After an intense battle, the Iron Monger was destroyed - as was Stane - and Iron Man publicly revealed his identity to the public.

    Needless to say, this attracted the attention of SHIELD, and Director Fury decided to approach Stark personally with an offer to join the Avengers Initiative.

Bruce Banner (Hulk)

Date of birth: December 18th, 1969

Bruce Banner did not have an easy childhood. While he had a loving relationship with his mother, his father was filled with an intense hatred for his son, which some of our psychologists speculate stems from a jealousy for how his wife showered Bruce with affection. Things came to a head on the Christmas Eve of 1973 when Bruce’s father lashed out at him for opening a present early. Having had enough of her husband’s abusive nature, Rebecca Banner tried to escape the house with Bruce only to be fatally struck by her husband. Neighbors witnessed this occur in the Banners’ driveway and called the police. While Mr. Banner was taken away in handcuffs, a traumatized Bruce was left in the care of his aunt Susan.

Growing up, Bruce was able to find some solace in the loving friendship of his cousin Jennifer Walters, whom he came to see as a sister. After graduating high school, he attended Harvard University, where he met and became close to Betty Ross, daughter of General “Thunderbolt” Ross. After graduating from Harvard, both Banner and Ross found work at Culver University, where Banner developed his interests in nuclear physics. Over the course of his career, he also became acquainted with other such notable scientists as Hank Pym, Richard Parker, and Erik Selvig.

Banner’s expertise led to him being recruited for a revival of Project Rebirth, an effort to recreate the Super-Soldier Serum that had led to the creation of Captain America. However, Banner was not privy to this knowledge and was instead led to believe that the serum he was working on was in fact for protection against radiation poisoning. When the time came for testing, Banner—oblivious to what he was actually working on—tested the Gamma Ray Projector, infused with the prototype serum, on himself against the advice of Betty Ross and her father. The operation transformed him into a hulking green monster that proceeded to go on a rampage, destroying the lab in which Project Rebirth 2.0 was being held. Horrified by what he had done and enraged by General Ross’ deception, Banner went on the run while General Ross sent his men to hunt him down, convinced that he had found the key to Project Rebirth’s success.

A child prodigy if there ever was one, Hank Pym was often overlooked by his mentors, who tried to discourage him from indulging his imagination and trying to do the possible. It was thanks to encouragement from his grandmother that Pym managed to overcome his insecurities and become the brilliant scientist that he is remembered as today. Working alongside the likes of Richard Parker and Bruce Banner, Pym graduated with the highest of honors and went on to found Pym Technologies. Among his greatest inventions was a type of particle (dubbed “Pym Particles”) that could effectively reduce one’s size, although they had to be in a specialized suit in order to control this ability.

Perhaps it was because of the potential dangers inherent within the Pym Particles that SHIELD decided to recruit Dr. Pym, not only to protect his inventions from potential wrongdoers but also to apply his technology to SHIELD’s own tech. Pym agreed to join SHIELD on the condition that his partner (both in the lab and in the romantic sense) Janet van Dyne be recruited as well, a term to which Director Fury agreed.

While with SHIELD, Pym created the Ant-Man suit as a means to test the Pym Particles in the field, with van Dyne donning a “Wasp” variant that had flight capabilities. One could suggest that the successful test of these suits planted the idea for what would become the Avengers Initiative in Director Fury’s head, and only a few months later the project was in full swing. Pym and van Dyne were the first to be recruited for the Initiative, joined shortly thereafter by Stark, Banner, Blake, and, finally, Captain Rogers himself.

Janet van Dyne (Wasp)

Birth date: March 4th, 1974

Relatives: Vernon van Dyne (parents), Hank Pym (husband)

Heiress to the wealthy van Dyne family, Janet would have enjoyed a fruitful career as a fashion designer had her path not crossed with that of Hank Pym. While attending the same university as Pym, Janet required a science course in order to get her degree, and it just so happened that Pym had become an assistant teacher for the course. According to Janet, her love for both Pym and science had blossomed then and there and it wasn’t long before she asked the introverted and eccentric scientist out.

Before long, Janet found herself working as a designer at Pym Technologies and was soon engaged to Dr. Pym. Around that time, SHIELD reached out to Pym with an offer to join them and the scientist agreed on the condition that Janet be recruited as well. She proceeded to work with him on the Ant-Man and Wasp suits, applying her skills as a fashion designer to make sure that they not only worked the way they needed to but also looked nice while doing it. While Pym donned the Ant-Man suit, Janet tested the Wasp variant and quickly became accustomed to its flight capabilities.

The success of their project inspired Director Fury to establish a team of superpowered humans that would defend the Earth from any and all potential threats. When Fury mused this thought aloud, Janet was quick to coin a name for the hypothetical team: the Avengers. Needless to say, Fury liked the idea and ran with it. Before long, Janet and Pym were the first to be recruited into the Avengers.

Peter Parker (Spider-Man)

Date of birth: October 14, 1985

By virtue of his parents being SHIELD operatives, Peter Parker was perhaps destined for a life that was a bit more than ordinary. After a deadly plane crash took his parents lives, Parker was left in the care of his aunt and uncle, who did everything they could to keep him away from the style of life that his parents had lived. That all changed one fateful day in 2001 when a radioactive spider—having escaped from a testing lab—bit fifteen-year-old Parker’s hand and gave him superpowers. Initially using these powers for his own gain, he decided to use them for good after his uncle was killed by a burglar.

Over the next several years, Spider-Man became the local defender of New York, dealing with everyday criminals and opportunistic supervillains, defeating the likes of Doctor Octopus, Sandman, and the Green Goblin. His efforts were enough to attract the attention of SHIELD but he declined all offers to join the Avengers Initiative, feeling that he worked best “looking out for the little guy,” as he put it.

In 2007, the sins of Parker’s father’s past came back to haunt him. During a fight with the Sandman, Parker came into contact with a black symbiote which had escaped from a SHIELD lab. Said symbiote was an alien Klyntar that his father had experimented on several years ago and recognized Spider-Man’s scent as that of Dr. Parker. Latching onto him, the symbiote enhanced Spider-Man’s abilities as well as aggrandized his personality and emotions. After realizing what the symbiote was doing to him, Spider-Man removed it only for it to latch onto its next host, Parker’s childhood friend Eddie Brock, who became the monstrous Venom.

Otto Octavius (Doctor Octopus)

Date of birth: 1946

Relatives: Torbert and Mary Octavius (parents), Rosalie (wife), Olivia Octavius (daughter)

Doctor Otto Octavius grew up in an abusive household, surviving the wrath of his father thanks to the overbearing and supportive nature of his mother. He eventually made it into the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he met his future wife Rosalie. Graduating with high honors, Octavius became an atomic research scientist. After he married Rosalie, the couple had a daughter whom they named Olivia.

At some point, he became friends with Norman Osborn, who agreed to help fund Octavius’ endeavors in developing an infinity energy source for New York City. He also gave Octavius access to Oscorp tech, which the doctor used to create a set of tentacle-like appendages which he would use to control the fusion reactor.

During a demonstration however, Octavius miscalculated his mathematics and the reactor went haywire, sucking in everything within range and killing his wife Rosalie. While Spider-Man was able to shut down the machine before it could create further havoc, Octavius had been knocked out, his set of mechanical arms being fused to his body while the inhibitor chip had been destroyed. While he was in the hospital, his arms acted on their own and killed the doctors that had been trying to separate them from his body. Upon coming to, Octavius was horrified by what he had done and stricken with grief when he remembered the death of his wife and the failure of his project.

Desperate to pick up where he had left off and determined to see his dream fulfilled, Octavius turned to a life of crime, using his mechanical arms to break into banks and research facilities for money and technology. After a few run-ins with Spider-Man, Octavius turned to Oscorp for help. As Norman Osborn had long since passed following the Green Goblin incident, the company was now run by his son Harry, who blamed Spider-Man for his father’s death. The Osborn heir agreed to fund Octavius’s efforts in exchange for Spider-Man’s life.

By this point, Octavius’s crimes—which had earned him the name “Doctor Octopus” from the Daily Bugle—had attracted the attention of Wilson Fisk, who also had his eyes on some of Spider-Man’s other foes. In addition to Oscorp’s funding, Fisk offered to make Doctor Octopus the leader of a team of supervillains that would be strong enough to take down Spider-Man. Seeing this as an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone, Octavius agreed.

Flint Marko (Sandman)

Little is known about Flint Marko’s past, although evidence gathered by SHIELD operatives indicate he was born as William Baker, son of Floyd Baker. Throughout his life, he had known nothing but poverty, and he often turned to committing crimes in order to get through life. For a brief time, he was able to find happiness by marrying and having a daughter, only for things to spiral again when his daughter was diagnosed with a terminal disease. Although his wife divorced him due to him returning to his criminal ways, Flint became determined in securing enough funds to pay for his daughter’s treatment.

Flint’s desperation eventually led to him being hired by Justin Hammer, CEO of Hammer Industries. Hammer promised to help pay for his daughter’s treatment in exchange for his services; what Flint did not realize was that this meant being used as a test subject for an attempt to recreate the Super-Soldier Serum in direct competition to Hammer’s rival Norman Osborn. The faulty serum ended up transmutating Flint’s body, altering his molecules and giving the ability to shapeshift into animated sand. Enraged by Hammer’s deception, Flint broke free and went on a rampage through New York City, bringing him into conflict with Spider-Man.

After escaping his first encounter with Spider-Man—which earned him the headline name “Sandman”—Flint Marko caught his bearings and regrouped, reassessing his situation and his newfound abilities. He proceeded to go on a crime spree across New York, breaking into banks and slipping out before Spider-Man or the authorities could get to him. After a time, the Kingpin caught wind of the Sandman’s actions and approached Flint Marko with a deal, recruiting his services just as Hammer had. Flint was hesitant at first, the wound of Hammer’s betrayal still fresh in his mind, but ultimately accepted when Kingpin offered to not only pay for his daughter’s treatment, but to give him a chance at squashing Spider-Man—someone who had become a persistent thorn in Flint’s side and an obstacle to achieving his goals. As such, the Sandman joined the newly-formed Sinister Six.

Norman Osborn (Green Goblin I)

Date of birth: April 14, 1961

Relatives: Ambrose Osborn (parents), Emily Lyman (spouse), Harry Osborn (son)

Norman Virgil Osborn was the son of Ambrose Osborn, a failed inventor who heaped untold abuses onto his son. Motivated to not become the same failure his father had turned out to be, Osborn graduated from Empire State University with degrees in chemistry and engineering and founded the Osborn Corporation with his friend and former teacher Mendel Stromm. Their partnership did not last long as Stromm was forced out of the company over accusations of embezzlement, allowing Osborn to take full control of the company. By this time, Osborn had fathered a son named Harry, who became the most important person in his life after his wife Emily passed away a year later.

Like many other aspiring scientists of his time, Osborn sought to create his own version of the Super-Soldier Serum after all its samples had been depleted by the end of the Cold War. After many years of experimentation, the first sample of the “Oz Formula” was created and tested on a cluster of spiders. One of these spiders managed to escape on the day a class of students of Midtown High School were taking a field trip to Oscorp’s labs. Among these students was Peter Parker, who was bitten by the spider and became the web-slinging superhero we know today.

Osborn was unaware of this incident until he began seeing news reports of an “amazing Spider-Man.” He initially thought nothing of it, having heard countless stories of wannabe vigilantes trying to follow in the path of Captain America and other such heroes. However, when he happened to catch a televised report of Spider-Man demonstrating superhuman strength in defeating opportunistic villains, Osborn began to speculate that a sample of his formula had somehow gotten out… and proven to be a success. Paranoid that Spider-Man (or whoever had given him his powers) would exploit the Oz Formula and rob him of the fame surrounding it, Osborn decided to test his own serum on himself. Ignoring the warnings of his scientists, Osborn subjected himself to the Oz Formula… and thus was the Green Goblin born.

Using other pieces of Oscorp technology, the Green Goblin spread mayhem across New York City as he sought to gain the attention of Spider-Man. After a series of encounters, each one either ending in the Goblin’s defeat or an indecisive victory, Osborn continued injecting himself with the serum, which ended up transforming him into a monstrous goblin-esque monster. The Green Goblin proceeded to rampage across New York and nearly managed to kill Spider-Man until the web-slinger tricked him into being stabbed by his own advanced glider. By this point, the effects of the serum wore off and Spider-Man realized his foe was in fact the father of his best friend Harry Osborn. With his last breath, Osborn asked Parker to not tell Harry—or anyone—of what he had become, and then died in his arms. Spider-Man then handed Osborn’s body over to the authorities, and the public was left to believe that the business mogul had simply been one of the Green Goblin’s many, many casualties—a story that was true, from a certain point of view.

Harry Osborn (Hobgoblin)

    Date of birth: September 11, 1985

    Harold Theopolis Osborn is the only child of Norman Osborn and thus sole heir to the Osborn Corporation. Throughout his childhood, he found it difficult to appease his father, especially as his aspirations and goals deviated from what his father wanted him to do. While attending Midtown High School, he became best friends with Peter Parker, although there was a slight rift between them as Norman would often treat Peter better than his own son during the few occasions Peter visited the Osborn household.

    Following the death of Norman Osborn, Harry inherited his father’s business and was immediately saddled with the burden of running the company. After a few rough months, during which he was nearly ousted by the Board, he managed to focus himself and put himself in the mindset of a businessmen, motivated by his desire to bring Spider-Man—whom he blamed for his father’s death—to justice. After a failed alliance with Dr. Octavius, the young Osborn decided to take matters into his own hands and tasked Oscorp’s scientists with recreating the Oz Formula that he knew had been his father’s passion project, unaware of the role it had played in Norman’s fate.

    History ended up repeating himself when Harry ended up taking the modified formula and transforming himself into the Hobgoblin. Arming himself with his father’s gear, the young Osborn went on a path of revenge in search of Spider-Man.
