Ardan-Gaea: Aetan's Journal

AETAN’S JOURNAL
Greetings, traveler. If you are reading this journal, it either means that circumstances outside of my control have forced me to abandon my writings and thus this journal… or I am dead. In any case, I hope that my work provides you with sufficient information on the world we live in and the dangers that may lurk within it. Hopefully it will prevent you from making the same mistakes I made.

Hopefully.
ENTRY #1: THE ANCIENTS
Let us start from the beginning.

According to what most believe, the world of Ardan-Gaea was created by a race of omnipresent cosmic beings known as the Ancients. These gods were divided into two separate pantheons: The First Pantheon, also known as the Great Ones, and the Second Pantheon otherwise known as the Dark Ones. The First Pantheon had more of a hand in the genesis of our world, as creation was more in their nature than their lesser, darker compatriots. When the first races were born, they instantly took to worshiping the Great Ones and named their world after the King and Queen of the Pantheon, respectively. These races were said to share many aspects and characteristics with the gods that had created them, such as Gaea’s beauty, Ardan’s strength, Kronon’s knowledge, Virlux’s wisdom, and so on.

The Dark Ones did not take too kindly to the level of worship and praise their counterparts received. Desperate to achieve the same gratification, the Dark Ones attempted to bring life of their own into existence. However, because of their inherent destructive nature, these creations ended up twisted and imperfect, lacking the positive qualities the Great Ones’ creations possessed. These horrifying creatures barely registered as sentient and were laughed upon by the gods of the First Pantheon.

Enraged by this insulting treatment, the Dark Ones turned against the Great Ones and their creations. Paving a wave of destruction across Ardan-Gaea, the Dark Ones defiled Ardan’s beautiful forests and poisoned Gaea’s serene oceans; they dismantled Tonza’s statues and burned down Virlux’s temple of worship. The Great Ones did everything in their power to repair the damage the Dark Ones wrought but their efforts were frequently rendered futile as the Dark One’s simply destroyed what they fixed again.

Things would eventually take a turn for the worse when something unexpected happened: two members of one of the first races, a male and a female, had found a way to procreate and ended up giving birth to a child. While this was a pleasant surprise to the Great Ones, it was taken as an insult by the leader of the Dark Ones; how could these fragile, mortal creatures be able to create life when he – a god – could not? The birth of the Firstborn pushed the Dark One over the edge and he ended up killing the infant out of revenge.

This unspeakable act was the breaking point for Ardan of the Great Ones; enraged beyond all belief, he unleashed his fury on the Dark Ones, who had not expected such anger from who they saw as a peaceful deity. Ardan focused most of his anger towards the one who had committed the act itself, delivering him a fate that was so horrific that the other Dark Ones were sufficiently cowed and forced to retreat to parts unknown.

When all was said and done, Ardan was left a weak and broken shell of his former self. While what he had done to the Dark One had drained him of all his power, the loss of life that had spurred him to this point left him hollow and inconsolable. Despite the others’ best efforts, Ardan shut himself off from the rest of the world, refusing to ever speak to anyone – god or mortal – ever again for fear of growing too attached to them only to lose them as he did the Firstborn. The other Great Ones were also affected, as the once-perfect world they had created was forever tarnished. While they did what they could to repair the damage that had been done, they would eventually depart for their realm as well, ceasing all contact with the races they had brought into existence.

Not fully understanding what had happened, the first races continued to praise and worship the Great Ones for all they had brought them, in the hopes that one day their prayers would be answered and that the gods would return to bestow upon their gifts of creation once more.

They would be waiting for a very long time.
ENTRY #2: THE FIVE KINGDOMS
In the initial years that followed the Ancients’ departure, the first races were joined as one society, helping one another survive in the primitive world. As time went on however and these races started to further develop, differences between the races quickly arose. The tall, beautiful children of the Sky Goddess Exalta desired to live high above the land; they saw themselves as more akin to the gods than any of the other races and therefore deserved to live as close to the Great Ones’ realm as possible. The short and hard-working children of Ardan, on the other hand, advocated that they be closer to the world the Ancients had given them and to become one with nature. Still others had different ideas, such as the quiet people of Gaea who thought they should live in their Mother’s oceans as they were sure to be stronger than Ardan’s land after the Great Father had used up all of his energy.

It soon became apparent that none of the races could agree on anything. Small disagreements turned into squabbles which then escalated into fights. Before long, lines had been drawn and the first races had become divided. Many ended up simply retreating to their preferred location and left the others behind:

the Children of Exalta broke off a piece of land and used their magic to propel it into the sky. This floating island was named Caelus and the people who lived on it became known as “elves” (derived from the term “the elevated ones”);

the Children of Ardan began creating tunnels that led beneath the earth, where they built underground cities from stone and other valuable materials they discovered, building an entire economy around these precious minerals. These people would come to be known as “dwellers” or “dwarves”;

the Children of Gaea dove into the oceans, which was a realm much more accommodating to their prehensile, snake-like lower bodies. Overtime, they would evolve to have bodies not unlike the fish and other marine life that shared their domain. They would become known as “gaeans” after the Goddess they worshiped, though some races would coin the term “mere-folk” (translated to “people of the sea”).

When all was said and done, the only race left dwelling on the surface were the last race to have been created by the Ancients. Brought into existence by the talentless Marn, they lacked the beauty of the elves, the grace of the gaeans, and the strength of the dwellers. According to a legend circulated among the elves, when Marn had presented his creations to his brothers and sisters, they had looked upon the lackluster race and deemed them inferior to the other races. Undeterred, Marn placed his creations into the world of Ardan-Gaea and gave them the name “humans” — a word which is rumored to roughly translate to “simple being” in the tongue of the Ancients.

With the other races having departed, the humans decided to make the surface their home and began developing their own cities. However, they were not alone on the surface; the creations of the Dark Ones also still roamed in the wilderness, living off of wild creatures and such. Overtime, they would begin to evolve into an intelligent race although the other races, including the humans, looked down upon them. These dark creatures would be given a variety of names: orcs, ogres, goblins, and other names that are best not repeated here. What they called themselves is a mystery, though the civilization they came to establish would become known as the Xal Society.

Before long, close to a thousand years after the Ancients had departed from their world, the Five Kingdoms of Ardan-Gaea had been established; the Sky Kingdom ruled from high above, the Iron Kingdom dwelled in the underground caverns, the Sea Kingdom swam in the gorgeous seas, the Mountain Kingdom of the Xal ruled from terrain mortals dared not travel, and the human-ruled Kingdom of Ardan ruled what had not yet been occupied.

Thus, began the Age of the Five Kingdoms.
ENTRY #3: THE WIZARDS
The word “magic” has a varied range of connotations depending on who you say it to. Some will laugh at you, others will give you a blank look, and even a few will threaten to rip out your lungs if you dare speak that word to them again.

But just what is magic? Magic is the universal word for the unexplained; to describe the powers of the Ancients that run through Ardan-Gaea and give the world life. But the Great Ones were not the only ones to have wielded this power; once, during the height of the Five Kingdoms’ age, there was an entire order of beings who could wield this magic and were dedicated to preserving the revered knowledge of the Ancients.

No one’s quite sure how these “wizards”, as they were called, could wield such power. Many believe that they were specially chosen by the Great Ones to carry their energy and use it to protect Ardan-Gaea in their stead. However, there are quite a few skeptics who think that the wizards were merely entertainers who used elaborate tricks to fool the world into thinking they could do the impossible. The fact that most wizards kept to themselves and rarely interacted with others didn’t do much to quash such rumors.

While it is said that a being of any race could wield magic (save for the twisted creations of the Dark Ones), most recorded wizards have been human. The reason for this is unknown, though some speculate it may have to do with their origins; perhaps Marn had sacrificed anything that could have made them standout in order to give them such abilities. However, such speculation is simply that and nothing more. After all, there are tales of a small order of elven wizards who maintain the power source keeping their island afloat, safeguarding it from troublemakers.

Naturally, the creatures of the Xal resent these wizards for wielding the power of the Great Ones and will go to great lengths to kill one if they ever cross paths with one. However, not all wizards necessarily use their powers for good; some, in fact, have tried to tap into the powers of the Dark Ones and learn their forbidden knowledge. To date, only one wizard has ever come close to succeeding, and it is because of them that the Five Kingdoms came together for the first time since the departure of the Ancients….
ENTRY #4: THE WICKED SORCERER
For the first five centuries of their existence, the Five Kingdoms had little to no contact with one another. Every once in a great while, a human child would claim to have spotted a gaean relaxing near a waterfall, or a dweller would catch a glimpse of an ogre from within a cave in the mountains; but for the most part, each of the kingdoms lived in their own individual bubble.

That is, until, they were brought together by a single individual: The Wicked Sorcerer.

As mentioned before, most wizards tended to use their powers for good. But Waldis the Wicked was an exception to this rule; he desired to use his magic to reach limits that had been never before dreamed. He wanted to tap into the essence of the Dark Ones and discover their secrets. Shunned and exiled by his fellow wizards, Waldis ventured out into the wilderness and came upon a settlement of wild creatures. The animals and insects which populated Ardan-Gaea had been created by the Ancients to maintain the world and provide food for the five races and were never intended to be much more beyond that. They lacked the intelligence necessary to form a society.

Waldis sought to change that.

The Wicked One used his powers to invade the creatures’ minds and bend them to his will. Dragons, serpents, and other such kin fell under his control and came to obey his every command. With this new army, Waldis launched an attack on the Ardan Kingdom, seeking to dethrone the ruling King and take the crown for himself.

The Kingdom itself never saw the attack coming. While there had been whispers of a rogue sorcerer plotting his revenge, such rumors had been dismissed by King Immor. In his eyes, the wizards were a band of fools who posed no threat to his kingdom. He and others who thought like him soon learned the hard way how wrong they were when a dragon dropped upon Castle Ardan and tore through the stone walls. Disturbed from his slumber, King Immor rushed out of his bed chambers to see the dragon seconds before it consumed him in a column of flame.

In time, the Kingdom had fallen to Waldis’ control and the castle was surrounded by dragons, threatening to devour anyone who tried to enter or leave the grounds. To the people of Ardan, all seemed lost. But a glimmer of hope remained as the King’s son, Prince Galen, had been away on a journey at the time of his father’s demise. Upon hearing word of what had been befallen his Kingdom, Galen did the unthinkable and sought out help from the outside world.

The first people he approached were the gaeans. He was familiar with the mer-people as a group of them had saved his life as a child when he nearly drowned while fishing with his uncle. Meeting up with his former savior, Galen gave her a message to deliver to the Sea Kingdom, imploring the Sea-Lord to provide aid to the Ardan Kingdom. He next set out for the Mines of Narud, the only location where dwellers were willing to meet with humans to trade valuable materials. Galen payed one of the dwarves nearly half of his gold to deliver a message to the Iron Empress, before setting out once more to gather any straggling rangers and knights he could find.

It is likely that, had things gone differently, the Sky and Mountain Kingdoms would have never become involved in the conflict. But Waldis, as it happened, had become overly confident with himself thanks to his successful ousting of Immor that he decided to strike at the Sky Kingdom by sending one of his dragons to the floating island of Caelus. This would prove to be a mistake as the dragon was instantly spotted by the elves and just as quickly shot out of the sky (By what, few can say, though some believe it was caused by the elven wizards supposed to exist on the island). When the fallen dragon touched ground, it created a quake that could be felt throughout Ardan-Gaea.

This encounter brought the elves out of their isolation and the Elven King sent his Sky-Riders down to the Ardan Kingdom to strike back. While birds and dragons clashed talons, the Sea and Iron Kingdoms agreed to the Prince’s demands, especially once the quake caused by the fallen dragon gave them proof enough as to what was happening. This quake also stirred the Xal from their hiding and their forces marched onto Ardan’s grounds at the same time as Prince Galen’s resistance.

Surrounded and outnumbered by people from all five of the kingdoms, Waldis the Wicked could only watch helplessly as his army of dragons and beasts was swiftly subdued. Not wishing to face the repercussions that were sure to befall him, Waldis took his chosen dragon steed and fled from the Kingdom, disappearing into the wilderness.

In the aftermath of the battle, which would go down in history as the Unity War, Galen was crowned as King Ardan V, a dynasty name that was reserved only for monarchs who proved exceptional skill in service to the Kingdom. Seeing the worth in an alliance, the five rulers pledged their loyalty to one another and agreed to come to each other’s aid when it was required.

Thus, for the first time in five hundred years, the Five Kingdoms had come together.
ENTRY #5: MALUMARBOR
This would not be the last time “dark magic” would pose a threat to the Five Kingdoms. Despite his defeat and subsequent exile, Waldis’ actions merely opened the gateway for possibilities previously unheard of. It wasn’t long before other aspiring witches and wizards were inspired to test the limits of what magic was capable of and use it to create things never before thought of.

One of these opportunistic individuals was a young witch named Natia. Raised by her mother, who wielded magic as well, Natia had an affinity for nature and was mesmerized by the beauty it created. When she first learned as a little girl that things such as trees and plants were alive, she asked her mother why they were incapable of moving or communicating the same way people and animals were. Her mother’s answer was simply, “That is simply the way things are.”

Unsatisfied with this answer, Natia sought to find a way that would make things such as trees able to act and live the same way people did. Once she came of age and had fully developed her magical talent, she headed off in search of knowledge that would provide her with the means of accomplishing this goal. Her quest inevitably led her to the forbidden teachings of Waldis the Wicked, and her attention was instantly drawn to the spells Waldis had used to control the minds of the dragons. After purchasing a tree sapling from a merchant, Natia ventured into Ardan-Gaea’s wilderness and planted the sapling. Then, she got to work.

Over the course of several months, she used her magic to not only accelerate the tree’s growth — reducing its span from several decades to less than a year — but to also tap into its essence and, essentially, give the nascent tree a mind of its own. The exact mechanics of what Natia did to the sapling and how she accomplished those feats remain a mystery to this day. After countless hours of work, Natia soon achieved what she had set out to do. By the time the sapling had fully grown from its adolescent state into an adult tree, it had gained a mind of its own.

This quickly proved to be the worst and last mistake Natia had ever made in her life.

Many speculate on what exactly went awry in Natia’s experiments. Some like to think that Natia’s spells had, rather than create a consciousness for the tree, summoned Waldis the Wicked’s spirit from the World-That-Lays-Beyond and imbued it in the tree itself. Others wonder if perhaps she had somehow transferred her own soul into the tree. Whatever the case may be, the end result was that Natia was dead — whether out of exhaustion or a result of murder — and Malumarbor was born.

After having not heard from her daughter in quite some time, Natia’s mother hired a bounty hunter to go looking for her and to bring her back home. Venturing into the wilderness, the hunter searched high and low for Natia, calling out her name and telling her that he meant no harm. He eventually reached a wide clearing, which was surrounded by foliage and dominated by a large dark tree planted in the center. Laying at its roots, resting peacefully with her eyelids closed and her hands folded over her stomach, was the recently-departed Natia.

Upon coming across her body, the hunter swore aloud and declared, “By the Ancients! What in the heavens could have happened to this poor girl?”

The tree answered him: “I did.”

The hunter was taken aback, not just from receiving a response but also the fact that it had come from the tree. After making sure he was not dreaming, the hunter said to the tree: “Did you kill her?”

The tree answered: “I am responsible.”

The hunter asked, “How is it you are a tree who is capable of speaking?”

The tree responded: “Because I exist.”

“How did you come to exist,” asked the hunter, “and deprive this poor girl of her life?”

The tree was silent for a moment. At the hunter’s feet, the ground began to tremble and he started to see roots sprouting out from beneath the soil, snaking towards his boots and coiling around his ankles. He opened his mouth as if to speak, or to scream, but another root suddenly sprang out and wrapped itself around his neck.

“Because,” the tree said after some consideration, the first of its kind to be capable of such thought, “I am Malumarbor.”

The hunter could only gaze at the tree in terror in the few seconds he had before the roots pulled him back down into the ground, burying him beneath the tree’s soil for all eternity.

When Natia’s mother did not hear from the hunter, she sent another one to find both him and her daughter. After they met the same fate, she sent another one; then another one; then another one. With each man or woman Malumarbor devoured, the larger it began to grow, its roots spreading all across the forest and sprouting out to form new trees. In time, the clearing in which Natia had planted her small sapling had grown into a full forest all of its own, which quickly overlapped with the rest of the wilderness and merged the other trees with Malumarbor’s consciousness.

Legend has it that Natia’s mother never stopped sending hunters until the day she died, wanting her daughter back more than anything else in the world. Legend also says that Natia’s body continues to lay peacefully in the center of the forest, cradled by Malumarbor’s roots and looking as young and serene as she ever had.

In fact, some say while venturing just on the outskirts of Malumarbor’s forest, if one were to listen closely, you would be able to hear what sounded much like weeping.

Prophecy of the Ancients II: Realm of the Demon Lords

 Truly, my 13 year old self was the penman of his generation.

REALM OF THE DEMON LORDS
---
PROLOGUE
    The Supreme Lord Onimi sat on his throne, tapping his long-nailed fingers on his chair arm. He was waiting for someone... or something, he wasn't sure. His bodyguard Retinax approached him.

    "My lord, the others are ready."

    "Excellent," Onimi muttered. "Let us begin."
---
CHAPTER ONE
Underground Thustra
    Jason and the others touched ground at last. They had been climbing for about half an hour until at last they had found a place to stop.

    "Geez!" Ethan exclaimed. "That dude made one deep hole!"

    "I think it might've gone this way," Jason said, glancing at a large tunnel in one of the walls.

    "All right then," Dion said. "Let's go."

    The journey through the tunnel took even longer.

    "This is pointless!" Drake complained. "That thing might be still going through here!"

    "If you want to leave and climb a half-hour to the surface, be my guest," Dion muttered.

    Drake didn't respond and continued walking.

    At last, the group saw light up ahead. They walked faster towards the source. Finally, they reached a village similar to the one on Thustra's surface. The lights were coming from strange looking stones with a dim glow to them. Soon, an elderly being approached them, followed by four guards.

    "Who are you?" the elder demanded. "What do you want?"

    "Calm down," Dion said. "I am Commander Dion of the Earth Alliance. We are tracking down a giant beast of some sort down here."

    "Well, nothing has come through here," the elder said. "Now turn back to where you came from!"

    "We can't. We have to find this creature."

    The elder grumbled. "Fine! Do whatever you want! Just don't bother us!"

    With that, the elder and the guards left.
Surface
    Minutes ago, the throne room of King Alaric's castle was silent, with Alaric's son and heir Homizz standing over the king's dead body. The messenger stood in shock. Soon, others in the castle received the news: Homizz was the new King of Thustra.

    Homizz was alone in his dark room, looking down on an orb. He had had this orb since he was nine years old, not knowing what it could do. Here, he was King and still did not know. Homizz decided to ignore it and headed to his coronation.
*  *  *
    A giant beast perched on a rock ledge and looked upon a sleeping army; his army, from many millennia ago. Soon, it would be time to awaken the army.

    But now, the beast had to arrange plans and bring back his apprentice.
---
CHAPTER TWO
    It seemed that the elder was right, Jason thought. The beast couldn't have gone though here as there were no tunnels large enough for the creature to fit through. The group headed for a large, dome-shaped hut to speak with the elder.

    The elder sat in front of a small lit fire. The four guards stood against the walls on either side. Dion approached the elder.

    "Excuse me, but is there any other way we can leave, besides the way we came?"

    The elder sighed. "Yes. There is a tunnel on the opposite side from the tunnel you came from." He lowered his head. "In that tunnel lies the realms of the Demon Lords. They are ruled by the Supreme Lord Onimi."

    The elder's voice started to tremble. "When I was younger -- when I was known as a hero -- I attempted to face Onimi. But I returned defeated."

    There was silence, until the elder said, "Go. Face the Demon Lords if you wish. But you won't succeed."

    The group left, but Jason lingered behind.

    "Uh, sir?" Jason started. "I didn't catch your name."

    "I have no name," the elder said. "I'm a failure."
*  *  *
    Dion and his group took the tunnel the elder had directed them to. As the group journeyed further and further, the tunnel became darker and darker. Suddenly, a vision struck Jason, stopping him in his tracks.

    It took place in a dimly lit lair, though it was different from the Imperious' lair. A dark cloaked being sat on his throne, his pupil-less green eyes glowing. Before him stood a hideous being with two red wing, skull-like shoulder pads, and four horns; two sticking out from the side of its head and two sticking upwards.

    When the latter being spoke, a booming yet raspy voice came out. "My lord, the others are growing tired. When will the Master come?"

    "Soon, Triskull, soon," the green-eyed being replied. "The Imperious says Zen-Aku has just brought him back and is heading here now."

    "What shall we do in the meantime?" Triskull asked.

    "We have visitors coming. Take care of them."

    "Jason!" Ethan shouted.

    Jason woke from the vision. "What?" he asked.

    "Seems like your mind trailed off," Dion said. "Are you okay?"

    "Yeah," Jason replied. "I'm fine."

    The others didn't look convinced but they didn't say anything and continued on.
*  *  *
   The creature soared lowly across the tunnel ground. At last it reached the Demon Lord realms. It flew to the capital, Ankoria, where the Supreme Lord's fortress stood, surrounded by a moat filled with lava.

    The creature perched on top of a defense tower. It folded up its wings. The beast gave a low growl, like a chuckle.

    It was time to talk.
*  *  *
    Dion and the gang decided to stop walking and relax. Jason sat down, away from the others. What did the vision mean, he asked himself. Who was Triskull? Who was the green-eyed being? And better yet: Why was he always getting these visions?

    The answers for all of those would have to wait, because a Hidiac was standing right in front of him.
---
CHAPTER THREE
    The Hidiac had its blade aimed at Jason's throat. Jason tried to call for help, but the Hidiac moved its blade closer. Luckily, Jason didn't need to call, as Usus came up and kicked the Hidiac in the ribs. The zombie-like beast's scream woke up the others. Usus took out his sword and killed the Hidiac.

    As the zombie collapsed to the ground, a low chuckle echoed throughout the cave.

    "My, I'm quite impressed," a voice said. "And I thought my ambushes were well-planned out."

    "Show yourself!" Leo demanded.

    "Tsk. Very well," the voice said. With that, a black-cloaked and blue-armored, masked being came forward.

    "Who are you?" Dion asked, aiming his blaster at the being.

    "I am Sharik," the being said. "One of the Imperious' greatest strategists."

    Soon, more Hidiacs appeared behind Sharik.

    "How did you get here?" Dion asked.

    "My master granted me teleportation powers. How I found you is a better question."

    "How did you find us then?"

    "Well, this wonderful person named Senfusa was kind enough to tell me."

    "Wait... is Senfusa the elder from the village?" Jason guessed.

    Sharik chuckled. "Why, indeed, boy."

    "We don't have time for this," Dion whispered to Jason. "On the count of three. One... two...."

    "What did you say--" Sharik started.

    "Three!" The group made a run for it.
*  *  *
     The group arrived at a dark, volcanic place.

    "I... think we've... lost him," Ethan panted. He looked up to see a small fortress over them. "Uh-oh," he muttered.

    The gang approached the castle's gates, where two guards stood. The guards crossed their staffs, blocking the gate.

    "You have no permission here nor on the Fire Lord's property. Leave now." Just as the guard said that, Sharik appeared, with twelve Hidiacs.

    The guards' eyes widened. "Sharik?" one guard stuttered.

    "Excuse me, my friends," Sharik said. "The deaths of these 'heroes' shall be quite gruesome."

    "Not if I can help it," Dion said as he shot Sharik in the shoulder.

    The guards charged towards Dion but were struck down by Usus. The Hidiacs screamed and lunged at the heroes, but were swiftly taken out by Dion. Suddenly, the gate opened.

    "You have proven yourselves worthy," a booming voice said. "You may enter."
*  *  *
    The creature came to ground level, right in front of Onimi.

    "Is it time?" Onimi asked.

    "No," the winged beast growled. "Not yet. First, we must bring back my apprentice."

    "Soon, my lord," Onimi said. "We must handle the heroes first."

    The creature's eyes narrowed. "The insects are no threat to us. They will not intervene."

    "Yet it was an 'insect' that killed your apprentice."

    Smoke puffed out of the creature's nose. "Fine. We'll deal with the insects. But make it quick."

    "As you wish, my lord."

Prophecy of the Ancients I: The Curse of Zen-Aku

A continuation of my old stories.
THE CURSE OF ZEN-AKU

CHAPTER ONE
Command Station, Year 2209
    Jason McKnight sat down in the center of the station. Next to him was his best friend Ethan and three others whom he did not know. The commander came in, looking doubtful at all five of them.

    "So... do you know why you're here?" he asked.

    The person opposite of Jason stood. "I'm Leo and I'm here to become a world hero."

    "Traits?"

    "I can throw a thug across Texas."

    The commander nodded then moved to the next person. He stood up. "I'm Conner and I'm here because my parents wanted me to."

    The commander grunted and moved on. He finally came to Jason. "You?"

    Jason stood up. "I'm Jason and... I don't really know why I'm here."

    "Is that so?" the commander said sharply. Jason didn't reply. "Right. Your ship will be ready tomorrow."

    "Uh, sir," Leo started. "Will I be captain?"

    "No, I will," the commander said. "Get packed."
*  *  *
    As dawn rose, Jason started packing. Ethan came in to the room, although it was more like a cell. It was empty besides the bed and closet, and cell.

    "You ready?" Ethan asked.

    "Yeah, soon." As Jason zipped up his bag, he saw a dusty piece of stone with a strange emblem on it.

    "What is it?" Ethan asked.

    "Here." Jason handed Ethan the stone.

    "Dunno. Keep it just in case."

    Jason packed the stone as Conner walked by. "C'mon. Commander's waiting."
*  *  *
    "All right, rookies," the commander said. "We're heading to System 609-048, one and a half hyperspace trips away, and it takes an hour for our hyperdrive to recharge, so get comfortable."

    The engine rumbled and a blue warp gate opened and the ship zoomed into it.

    Jason finally found a time to nap, which was hard because of the loud engine (which was harder when his room was in the ship's back). But as soon as he fell asleep, he wish he didn't.

    The nightmare was like this: rows of people were chained to a wall. A dark, purple-armored being came up to them.

    "My lord, what shall I do with them?" The being's voice was deep and loud.

    A raspy voice replied. "Whatever you do, don't harm them. They'll be perfect additions to my Hidiacs."

    "As you wish. You." The dark knight pointed to one of the people in the front row. "Congratulations. You're the first Styxyod from scratch."

    He took out a green/purple colored chip and shoved it into the man's mouth. The man then went through a surprisingly painless mutation, and a blue armored being with a skeleton helmet stood.

    Then Jason woke up.
---
CHAPTER TWO
    When Jason came to the bridge, Conner was glued to the main computer.

    "Er, Conner?" Jason asked. "Are you allowed to do that?"

    Jason and Conner turned around to see the commander. Jason saw a name tag on him, saying "Dion".

    "Get out," he said.

    "Uh, sir?" Jason asked. "Wasn't Dion a knight eons ago?"

    "Haven't you heard of ancestors, kid?" Dion snapped. "Now go strap in. We're gonna make one more hyperjump."

    Soon, once Ethan, Leo, and the fifth member Drake strapped in, Commander Dion hit the hyperdrive button. Nothing happened.

    "What in the name of my namesake..." Dion mumbled.

    "Uh, sir," Conner said, putting on his glasses. "Is... that a mouth?"

    "Oh crud," the commander said. "Hold on! I'm making a u-turn!"

    As Dion swerved the ship around, the monster stretched its head out of nowhere. Soon, an arm, then a body, wings, legs then tail.

    "Great," Conner mumbled. "A space behemoth."

    The thrusters boosted up and the ship speeded away. Unfortunately, the beast was faster. Its mouth widen, ready to swallow the ship when lasers shot out. The beast recoiled, screaming in pain. It spread out its wings and retreated.

    "Thank you, auto-defense turrets," Dion muttered. He hit the hyperdrive button again. This time, it worked. The ship jumped into lightspeed.
*  *  *
    When Jason fell asleep again, he was in the same place as the chained up people. The dark armored knight knelt before a throne, where a tall-looming being shrouded in shadows sat.

    "What is it, Koragg?" asked the same raspy voice as last time.

    The knight, Koragg, raised his head. "My lord, my soldiers have located an Earth-made spacecraft in System 609-048."

    "And I care about this, why?" the voice asked.

    "It could be a threat," Koragg said.

    "No one or thing is a threat to us, Koragg."

    The knight gulped. "I... understand, my lord."

    "Good," the voice muttered. "I was thinking I had to have Necrolai suck your soul out."

    With that, Jason woke.
*  *  *
    "All crew members, we have landed," Dion said over speaker. The crew exited the ship.

    "This place is lame," Drake said.

    It was true, Jason thought. The planet was a wasteland, with solid rock ground and mountains in the distance. Jason felt a strange aura-like feeling to the place.

    Dion came from behind the group. "Let's go. Time's racing."
---
CHAPTER THREE
    Everywhere Dion and the group walked looked like the same place as where they started.

    "This is boring," Drake muttered.

    Leo nodded. "Yeah, boss, where's the excitement?"

    "You sound like whining two year olds," Dion snapped.

    Ethan chuckled. "Ouch. Sharp comeback, man."

    "Shut up," Leo said.

    After almost an hour of walking, the group set down for a rest. Almost everyone were too busy eating to talk. Ethan came to sit next to Jason.

    "What's up, bro?"

    Jason was silent.

    "Jason, you okay?" Dion asked.

    "I... I've been having strange dreams, sir. Like they're real," Jason said.

    "What are they about?"

    "A black and purple knight talking to a raspy voice."

    Dion had a grim look on his face. "This isn't good. Really not go--"

    Before he could finish, the ground gave way and the group fell down a deep hole.
*  *  *
    When Jason woke up, he was in a medieval-styled room, with a lit fire in the fireplace. He seemed to be the only one in the room. When he stood up, he saw the walls covered with portraits, presumably of famous people.

    When Jason opened the door in front of him, a red-armored being with a gold mask stood in the way.

    "Who are you?" the knight demanded.

    "I... I'm Jason."

    "You are?" the knight interrupted. "Well, pardon me then. Er, the king wishes to see you."

    The knight led Jason to the throne room, a large wide room with a red carpet with gold markings spread across the floor. At the end of the room was, of course, a throne where a bold, majestic king with a golden crown on his head sat.

    "My King, he is here," the knight said.

    "Thank you, Jaller. You are dismissed."

    The knight nodded and left Jason with the King.

    "Uh," Jason stuttered, "where am I? Where are the others?"

    "What others?" the King asked. He had a bush brown beard with a bold face. "You were the only one we found."

    "B-but--"

    "The fall must've done something to your head," the King said. "Come into the dining room. You must be hungry."

    In the dining room, there was a long table filled with food on plates and in bowls. There was a royal looking chair, where the King took his place. Jason took a seat at the opposite end of the table.

    "Help yourself!" the King said cheerfully.

    Jason picked a biscuit from the bowl. It felt like it came right out of the oven. But Jason didn't eat it. Something about the King made him nervous. But he didn't know what.

    "Uh, Your Majesty, what's your name?" Jason asked.

    "I am King Alaric the Second of the Kingdom of Thustra," said the King. "Aren't you hungry?"

    "Uh, no, Your Highness."

    "But you must be, lad!"

    Jason got up. "Uh, may I leave? Sir?"

    King Alaric lowered his head. "I'm afraid not." Suddenly, two black-armored guards came and seized Jason. "We must talk."
---
CHAPTER FOUR
    Dion, Leo, Drake, Ethan, and Conner walked down a tunnel they had found when the ground collapsed. Unfortunately, Jason was missing.

    "How long is this tunnel?" Drake asked lazily.

    "Ask Smarty," Dion muttered, glancing at Conner.

    "There's light ahead!" Conner exclaimed.

    The group ran towards the light, climbed a small group of rocks, until finally, they were on the surface again.

    "Whoa," Ethan said under his breath.

    Apparently there was life on the planet. Enough life to make a small village even. When the group fully emerged, a hunched elderly man awaited them.

    "Who are you?" the man demanded. "What brings you here to our village?"

    Dion stepped forward. "I am Senior Commander Dion of the Earth Alliance. My crew and I have come to ask your planet, Thustra, to join the Alliance."

    The man sighed. "We would like to, but we can't."

    "Why not?" Leo asked. "Scared?"

    "We are not cowards, off-worlder!" the man snapped. "Our village... is cursed."

    "How?" Dion asked.

    "There was a dark being, named Zen-Aku, who came to our village. He hated us, and all others on this planet, and so he cursed us. The curse is that if any of us leave the village's borders... we will die."
*  *  *
    Jason sat in a cold, empty cell. There were only two things in it: a wooden, unsteady bed, and and a porter potty. He waited for an hour until King Alaric and two black guards came.

    "You have two options," the King said. "Stay here for eternity or--"

    "Die?" Jason interrupted.

    "Yes. You do read minds well, don't you? What is your choice?"

    Jason looked at the ceiling. There was an air vent right there. If he could just jump high enough....

    "You'll never take me alive," Jason muttered. He jumped and managed to grab the vent and pulled it off.

    "Seize him!" Alaric shouted. The cell door opened and the two guards ran in, but Jason was already in the vent.
*  *  *
    Alaric clenched his fists. One of the guards walked towards the King, while the other tried to get into the vent.

    "What will you tell the Imperious?" the first guard asked.

    "Nothing. Not yet." The King turned away, heading back for his throne.
*  *  *
    Dion and the group sat in a bar, waiting for their drinks... and for Jason. The elderly man they had met earlier came in.

    "Pardon me, but I have failed to introduce myself," he said. "I am Vakama, elder of the village." Dion and Vakama shook hands. "Are you on a quest?" Vakama then asked.

    "We're looking for our friend, Jason," Conner said.

    "When we woke up," Dion started, "he was gone. I believe he was captured."

    "No, not captured," Vakama said. "Possibly saved. The only ones who go underground are King Alaric's forces."

    "Where's King Alaric?" Dion asked.

    "Southeast of the village. But you can't get to him."

    "Why not?"

    Vakama sighed. "Because, despite being offworlders, you too are affected by the curse."
---
CHAPTER FIVE
    Jason journeyed through the air vent, avoiding strong powered fans. He [went?] through a maze of corridors, until he walked across another vent gate. A meeting was being held.

    "Sir Navi, we have armies ready to attack King Jarsan's castle," a voice said.

    "Excellent," another voice, most likely Sir Navi's, replied. "Send them to surround the castle."

    Jason didn't stick around to hear more and continued through the air vent.
*  *  *
    A vision struck Jason like a blade. Once again, it took place in a dark place, where a throne was placed.

    "Koragg," the raspy voice hissed. "Come here."

    The purple and black knight knelt before the shadowed being. "What is thy bidding, master?"

    "The time has come. I've found the boy near King Alaric's castle. Retrieve him."

    "As you wish."
*  *  *
    Jason knew "the boy" meant him. He hurried and found a vent gate leading outside. He ran like crazy, hearing marching footsteps nearby. Whether it was Alaric's army or Koragg, he didn't care. He needed to find Dion, Ethan, and the others quick.
*  *  *
    Dion couldn't believe it. They were basically stuck here unless the curse was lifted, which didn't seem likely anytime soon. Vakama came up to him.

    "There is hope, commander," the elder said. "My grandson, Kapura, here..." He glanced at a young man in red armor. "There are rumors that he is unaffected by the curse."

    "What started the rumor?" Drake asked.

    "Once, Kapura left to find food and passed the village's borders. He returned alive. Two years since then, he's not died."

    "And how could that help us?" Leo asked, rudely.

    "Well, the 'immune' charm is contagious, apparently, according to the rumor."

    "We'll take the chance," Dion interrupted. "Let's go, guys."
*  *  *
    Jason continued running until he came into a forest. Thinking he'd lost Alaric and Koragg's men, he slowed his pace. The forest was, naturally, nothing but trees. No bushes, and the trees didn't have leaves on them, which for some reason creeped Jason out.

    He explored the forest for a few minutes when he found a strange tree, almost creepier than the others. It was black and hollow, branches arranged like arms and three holes in the shape of a face. Jason shuddered and moved on.
*  *  *
    Kapura led Dion and the group out of the village.

    "So where are you heading?" Kapura asked.

    "We're looking for our friend Jason," Dion answered. "We think he's at King Alaric's castle."

    "I can lead you to it!" Kapura ran off.

    "I have a bad feeling about this," Ethan muttered.
*  *  *
    Jason was lost. Every time he made a turn, he came back to where the black tree was. Jason was now officially creeped out. He gave up and examined the tree. It had to be responsible for all this.

    He touched the black tree and suddenly, a branch arm seized him.

    "Who dares awaken Maluarbor?!" a voice boomed.
---
CHAPTER SIX
    "Answer me!" the tree roared.

    Jason looked up at the tree's face. "I... who are you?"

    "I am Lord Maluarbor of the Trees of Thustra!" the tree boomed, proudly this time. Then the tree's eyes narrowed at Jason. "Why have you awaken me?"

    "I... I didn't know you were alive."

    "You couldn't tell by my powers?"

    "What powers?"

    "You are blind," Maluarbor sighed. "I rule this forest. Any who enter may not leave unless permitted."

    "Why can't anyone leave?" Jason asked.

    The tree sighed. "I must tell you the full story then." He placed Jason on a nearby rock. "When Alaric became king, he had all of Thustra's forests cut down to make ships, bridges, houses, so on. Fortunately, I managed to protect my forest just in time by putting a charm on it. Now nobody can leave and instead enjoy the beauty of nature."

    Jason looked up at the Tree Lord. "Sir, I have to leave. I'm looking for my friends and Alaric's men are following me."

    The Tree Lord sighed. "Very well, you may leave. But promise me you'll return to nature if you get the chance."

    "I promise."

    With that, Maluarbor led Jason out of the forest.
*  *  *
    "Koragg, sir! We've lost him!" a Hidiac growled. "Should we return to the lair?"

    "No," Koragg muttered. "Signal Morticon and the Beastman."
*  *  *
    At last, Dion, Kapura, and the others arrived at King Alaric's castle. As they reached the front, the drawbridge dropped down where a pale, long-faced man stood.

    "More visitors? The King is growing impatient," the man said. "Guards, seize them."

    Inside the castle, Dion and the group were placed before King Alaric.

    "I assume you are the 'others' my previous prisoner referred to," the King muttered.

    "Wait," Ethan said. "You mean Jason was here?!"

    "Whatever his name was, yes," the King answered. "I've sent my heir, Homizz, to capture him."

    "Let us go!" Leo shouted. "Or I'll break your neck!"

    "My, you must be the tough one of this group," Alaric muttered. "Navi, have them executed."

    Navi, the long-faced man, nodded. "Yes, Your Highness."
*  *  *
    Standing over Jason was a black-cloaked man, with a bow in his hand and an arrow pack slung over his shoulder. His face was masked with only his blood-red eyes showing.

    "And people wonder why my father considers me a great hunter," the man said to himself.

    "Who are you?" Jason asked.

    The man chuckled. "Glad you asked. I am Homizz, heir of King Alaric."
---
CHAPTER SEVEN
    "Let me guess," Jason said. "Alaric sent you to capture me again."

    "Duh," Homizz replied. "Or kill you where you stand, either way."

    "What does Alaric want with me anyway?" Jason demanded.

    "I don't know. And I don't care. He just told me to bring you in -- dead, if necessary." Homizz then readied his bow and aimed at Jason. Just as he fired the arrow, Jason leaped out of the way. Before Homizz could fire again, Jason ran like the wind.

    "Not much into a fight, are you?" the hunter mocked. He fire again, missing by an inch above Jason's head. Jason finally managed to lose Homizz by heading to a very dark cave.
*  *  *
    Navi led the group to the execution room, with a fully-hooded man with an ax in hand waiting.

    "You know what to do," Navi said to him.

    The brute nodded and raised his ax. At the last possible second, Leo kicked the brute in the legs, causing the executioner to topple forward. The group moved aside, narrowly missing the ax. Freeing themselves from the cuffs Navi had placed on their hands, the group began their escape.
*  *  *
    In the cave, very few lit torches hung on the walls. Jason took a torch and journeyed deeper into the cave. He could've sworn he heard voices echoing through the cave. He looked at a few ancient drawings on the wall, presumably depicting Thustra's ancient civilizations and symbols. Jason ignored them and continued.

    Now the voices were getting closer... and clearer.

    "He suspects nothing," said one voice.

    "Or does he?" another replied. "He may be smarter than he appears."

    The first voice chuckled. "True. But no matter. Do we kill him now?"

    "Be my guest."

    Jason turned around to see an ugly being before him, carrying a staff with an O-shaped tip.

    The beast's mouth curved into a smile. "Hello."
*  *  *
    When the group reentered the throne room, a row of guards were waiting. Their swords blasted a strange red beam of lightning. Fortunately, Dion and the others managed to avoid the blasts.

    "This way!" Dion shouted, as the gang headed for the door leading to the drawbridge. Before they were less than ten feet away, the door opened and a cloaked, red-eyed man entered.

    "Did I miss something important?" the man asked.

    "Homizz, at last!" King Alaric exclaimed. "It appears our former prisoner's friends have come to avenge his death."

    "If that former prisoner was dead, yeah," Homizz replied.

    "What do you mean?!" Alaric demanded. "He's still alive?!"

    Homizz sighed and nodded.

    "I trusted you to take care of him!" Alaric shouted, startling a few guards.

    "I know, father, but--"

    "Enough!" Alaric snapped. "Now take care of these prisoners."

    "But they're gone," Homizz said.

    "What?!" It was true: Dion, Kapura and the others had escaped.
*  *  *
    Jason ran past the person-sized beast and escaped the cave. Waiting there was an armored yeti with a club. It slammed the club into the ground, knocking Jason down.

    "Fightoe, tell Warmix I've got him!" the yeti said to the ugly-faced beast.

    "Well done, Bellow," replied the ugly beast, Fightoe. "I'll take him to Koragg."

    "No, I will!" the yeti protested.

    "We'll both take him," Fightoe decided.

    "Fine." As the yeti picked Jason up, a samurai-armored figure arrived.

    "Warmix, we've got him," Fightoe said.

    "Excellent. The Imperious will be pleased," Warmix said.

    The three beasts then left with Jason in tow.
*  *  *
    "I think... I think we've lost them," Dion panted.

    Leo cracked his knuckles. "Why couldn't we pound those twerps?!"

    "We didn't stand a chance, Leo," Dion answered. "We were lucky enough to avoid those guards' weapons."

    The group were suddenly interrupted by a strangely familiar voice. "Good thing I'm here to save the day."

    It came from a bearded man with blue and gold clothes. Dion could only say the man's name: "Daggeron."
---
CHAPTER EIGHT
    Warmix, Fightoe, and Bellow brought Jason to an underground lair; the exact same one in Jason's dreams.

    "My lord, we have him," Warmix announced.

    No response. Jason noticed no one was sitting on the throne. Was Warmix blind? Then a raspy voice, the same from Jason's visions, spoke.

    "Well done, Warmix," it said. "Come here, boy."

    Jason gulped and stepped forward.

    "Do you know where you are?" the voice asked. "This was once the Temple of Tao Zanto. Of course, you wouldn't know." The voice cackled.

    Then something hit Jason. "Who is Zen-Aku? Do you know him?"

    The voice stopped laughing. "Do I know him? Do I know him?! Foolish boy...." Suddenly, the voice grew deeper. "I am Zen-Aku!"

    Jason blinked. Even the three beasts were surprised. Then, a black-armored figure with a wolf-shaped mask stepped out.

    "Where is the Imperious?!" Warmix demanded.

    "Oh, he's fine. I just took on his role because he was too busy to come to Thustra and had me lead the army here," Zen-Aku replied, though Warmix was still dumbstruck. "Yes, yes, I know. Morticon would've been a better choice. But no matter."

    Zen-Aku turned to Jason. "Now, I bet you're wondering why you're here." The wolf beast chuckled. "Because you are our only hope in resurrecting Majin Zarak."

    Jason shook his head. "But... he's just a story!"

    "Not what my master, Majin Gorma told me." Zen-Aku paused. "Warmix... gather the Hidiacs and the Chimera. He's coming."
*  *  *
    "Who's Daggeron?" Ethan asked.

    "An old friend," Dion answered.

    "I heard you were having bad luck," Daggeron said, helping the group up on their feet. "So what happened?"

    "We've lost our friend Jason," Conner replied.

    Daggeron sighed, grimacing. "I knew the Imperious' army would be after him."

    "And... who is the Imperious?" Ethan asked.

    "A terrible creature," Dion replied.

    "We have to go," Daggeron said suddenly.

    "Why?" Leo asked. "There's nothing here!"

    "Koragg... he's coming!"

    But it was too late. A purple energy beam blasted the group to the ground.

    "Go!" Daggeron shouted to Dion's group. "I'll handle him!"

    As the group ran, Koragg, with an army of Hidiacs, approached Daggeron.

    "Well, this is certainly a surprise," the dark knight chuckled.

    Daggeron narrowed his eyes at him. "What do you want, Koragg?"

    "The boy, of course," Koragg said. "You do know the Imperious' plan, correct?"

    "That's why I'm trying to stop you," Daggeron replied.

    Koragg took out his sword. "Well, come on then. Try and stop it."

    Daggeron responded by turning into a gold and blue armored knight with a red cape in a flash of light. He took out a gold sword and lunged at Koragg.
*  *  *
    Dion, Kapura, Ethan, Drake, Conner and Leo were soon blocked by their destination by a swarm of Hidiacs and a hideous beast.

    "Get down!" Kapura shouted. "It's a Chimera!"

    The group did so as the Chimera breathed out a blast of fire. Dion pulled out his dual blasters and fired at the Hidiacs. The henchmen went down easily except for the Chimera.

    "We have to fall back!" Conner cried.

    "No!" Leo shouted. "I'm not giving up!"

    "Dude," Drake said. "As much as I think you're cool, you'll never live a fight against that... thing!"

    "Come on, Leo!" Dion shouted as he grabbed Leo by the shoulder.

    The Chimera roared in both anger and laughter as the group fled.
---
CHAPTER NINE
    King Alaric was pacing back and forth in his throne room, waiting to be signaled by the Imperious to begin the plan. Homizz, who was watching his father's pacing, was obviously annoyed.

    "Your Highness, would you stop that? Who knows when the Imperious is ready."

    "Koragg said it would be soon," Alaric replied.

    "Well, sometimes plans change," said Homizz.

    "Just... leave me," Alaric demanded. Homizz rolled his red eyes and left.
*  *  *
    Blades clashed as Daggeron and Koragg dueled on Thustra's plains. Koragg kicked Daggeron in the shins, knocking the gold knight down.

    The dark warrior chuckled. "Naturally, heroes are weak."

    Koragg raised his sword, ready to deliver the final blow. Suddenly, a roar was heard in the distance. Distracted, Koragg turned around in the sound's direction. Daggeron took this advantage and grabbed the dark knight's leg. Koragg looked down at Daggeron.

    "You're pathetic," he muttered and shook the golden warrior off.
*  *  *
    Jason struggled against the chains keeping him to a stone wall. After ten minutes, he gave up. Still, he wondered, how could he help Zen-Aku in bringing this "Majin Zarak" back?

    Jason lowered his head in defeat. Then the cell door opened and Fightoe stepped in and took Jason off the wall.

    "What are you doing?" Jason demanded.

    "Bait," Fightoe answered with an ugly, sly smile.
*  *  *
    Dion and the group ran back to the village, where Vakama was waiting.

    "Well?" the elder asked. "Have you found your friend?"

    "No," Dion panted. "Koragg's forces are after us."

    "Well, we can't help you there," Vakama said sadly.

    "I didn't say you had to," Dion muttered.

    The group and the villagers retreated to their homes as the Hidiacs, Chimera, and other beasts marched forward.
*  *  *
    The source of the roar charged at Koragg and Daggeron. It was a horned, hunched humanid beast with an unfriendly face. Apparently, at the sight of Koragg, it slowed to a stop. It lowered its head to Koragg and growled at Daggeron.

    The dark knight chuckled and turned to the behemoth. "Kill."
*  *  *
    It happened so quick to Jason it was like a blur. The ceiling broke down and a huge, black tree was in view. The tree grabbed Fightoe and threw him fifty miles away.

    "Maluarbor?" Jason guessed.

    "Correct," the tree said as it gently grabbed Jason. "I admire heroism. Which is why my friends and I have come."

    "What friends?" Jason asked.

    Soon, his question was answered when approximately ten grey trees, a foot shorter than Maluarbor, came from a distant forest.

    "Whoa," was all Jason could say.
*  *  *
    At last, Alaric stopped pacing. Just then, a messenger ran into the room.

    "My king, the Imperious' army is ready to seize the village!" the messenger announced.

    "Excellent," Alaric replied. "Send Navi's men."
---
CHAPTER TEN
    Dion, Ethan, Conner, Leo, and Drake sat at a long, wooden table. Ethan and the others sat at the side while Dion and Vakama sat at the ends.

    "Do you know why these dudes are after your village?" Ethan asked Vakama.

    "No," the elder said. "I don't know what they want. They're just... cruel."

    "Then we must fight!" Leo said.

    "Leo..." Dion said. "We won't stand a chance against fifty henchmen and a Chimera."

    There was much silence until Kapura ran in. "They've entered the village!" he said.

    Dion's group took random objects from the wall: A long stick, knives, etc.

    "Well, hey..." Drake sighed. "If we die, they'll die when they have."
*  *  *
    Before the Behemoth could seize Daggeron, the gold knight backflipped and sliced the beast's horns off. The Behemoth roared in agony and charged back towards Daggeron. This time, the knight leaped forward and plunged his sword into the beast's chest, killing it. Soon, Koragg and Daggeron came face-to-face again.

    "Impressive," Koragg said sarcastically.

    The dark knight unsheathed his sword. Daggeron readied his. The opposite knights lunged at each other once more.
*  *  *
    The Hidiacs attacked the village, with Dion and the others doing their best to hold their stand. The Chimera was face-to-face with the village's most skilled fighter, Usus.

    The Chimera grabbed Usus and held him over its head. The warrior took out his dagger and stabbed the beast's head, causing it to drop him. The Chimera roared in pain, just as Kapura came up and attacked the beast with a fallen Hidiac's sword. The young villager plunged the sword into the Chimera but to no effect. It took the sword out and charged at Kapura.

    With the Chimera distracted, Usus threw his dagger at the beast's head, grabbed the sword, and finished it off.
*  *  *
    Jason, Maluarbor, and his fellow trees journeyed across Thustra's plains to find Dion and the others.

    "Where do you think they are?" a high-pitched-voiced tree asked.

    "Most likely Alaric's castle, where I was," Jason said.

    "Doubtful," Maluarbor said.

    "How do you know?" Jason asked.

    "I know King Alaric," the black tree replied. "A little too much. He doesn't keep prisoners alive unless told to."

    "So, are they dead?"

    Before Maluarbor could answer, a boulder flew by.

    "Catapults!" the high-pitched tree shouted.

    Maluarbor put Jason down. "Go! We'll catch up!"

    Reluctantly, Jason ran.
*  *  *
    Just when it seemed like victory, Alaric's men marched towards the village, followed by catapults and small turret towers. Soon, the village was out-numbered. The group had no choice but to surrender.

    The villagers were all out, arms behind their head. General Navi approached Dion.

    "It's sad," Navi muttered. "You came here in hopes of a simple alliance." The pale general cackled. "And you got an opposing force." He turned to his right-hand man. "Cuff them."

    Just then, a boulder flew by and took out sixty percent of the Hidiac army. The villagers and Navi's army looked up to see a horde of giant trees, hurling boulders at the Hidiacs. With Navi distracted, Dion took the cuffs and knocked Navi out with them.
*  *  *
    Daggeron was at Koragg's mercy again. This duel was becoming one-sided.

    "I have no time for this," Koragg muttered.

    He sheathed his sword and teleported away. Daggeron got to his feet and saw a figure in the distance. The knight knew who it was and prayed that the figure would be able to end this.
---
CHAPTER ELEVEN
    Jason took the same path Fightoe, Warmix, and Bellow had taken to Zen-Aku's temple. At last, he reached his destination.

    Inside, thousands of hideous beasts surrounded a pool of a strange liquid. Zen-Aku came forward, followed by two guards. The beasts started chanting in an unfamiliar language. As they chanted, Zen-Aku raised a staff and blasted a beam of energy at the pool. The wolf-armored being started speaking.

    "It has been eons since our master ruled our empire. Now, he shall rule once more." Zen-Aku's eyes moved in Jason's direction. "And we seem to have a visitor."

    The beasts turned and growled at Jason.

    "Leave us," Zen-Aku snarled. The beasts backed up against the walls.

    Jason stepped forward. "I can't let you bring this... master of yours back!"

    Zen-Aku laughed. "Of course you can't let us. You're a hero. It's what you do." The wolf-masked villain approached Jason. "Now, this is where you come in."

    Zen-Aku swiftly took off his mask and placed it over Jason's face. Before the beasts' eyes, the old body of Zen-Aku crumbled to dust.

    The messenger ran into King Alaric's throne room. "My king, Navi's army has been defeated!"

    "What?!" Alaric said, amazed. "But I... he... I had a brilliant strategy!"

    "Well, then...." Homizz entered the room, with only his red, pupil-less eyes showing. "I think a change is needed."

    In a heartbeat, he took out his dagger and stabbed Alaric in the back.

    Jason felt nothing but pain as the mask took control of his body. Zen-Aku's voice spoke in his mind.

    "In order to bring the Master back, your body is needed for the Master's body core."

    The mask willed Jason to walked towards the pool, despite Jason's resistance.

    No, Jason thought. He won't die like this. He had to stop this. Then, with all his willpower, Jason took the mask off and threw it into the pool. That turned out to be a bad idea as Zen-Aku's upper body emerged.

    "You foolish boy... you cannot escape your destiny. You will regret this day. I promise."

    With that, Zen-Aku reentered the pool and a giant arm took his place. Jason turned and ran to the exit as soon as a body started to emerge.

    At last, Navi's army and the Hidiacs were defeated. Now all that was left was to find Jason. As Dion and the others were about to leave, Jason ran into them.

    "Jason!" Ethan shouted, glad to see his best friend again. "Where have you been?"

    Before Jason could answer, a giant beast rose up in the distance. It spread out its wings and flew up.

    "You imbeciles!" it roared. "You think it's over... but my conquest has just begun!"

    With that, the beast dove into the ground, creating a large tunnel heading downwards.

EPILOGUE
    The village held a small victory celebration, comforted enough with the curse being lifted. Young villagers listened to Jason as he recounted his adventures. In the middle of the celebration, Daggeron returned, exhausted from his duel with Koragg. The rest of the celebration was nothing but that.

    The next day, Dion, Vakama and Daggeron examined the large hold the creature had made in the ground.

    "There's definitely something down there," Dion said. "My crew and I will explore it."

    Vakama nodded slowly. "I've put my trust in you. I'll allow one of my villagers to go with you."

    "I see," Dion replied. "Any volunteers?"

    "I'll go," Usus said.

    "Fine. Daggeron?"

    "I'll stay here and protect the village," Daggeron said. "I have a hunch Alaric may attack again."

    "Then it's settled," Dion said.

    Soon, Dion, his crew, and Usus journeyed into the tunnel.

    Koragg arrived at the true Imperious' temple. He bowed before his master.

    "My lord, Alric is dead."

    "I knew he wouldn't succeed," the Imperious muttered. "And Zen-Aku?"

    "Unknown," Koragg said.

    "Well then," the Imperious said. "Send our other agent."

    "As you wish, my lord."

SHORT STORY: "Howl of the Wolf"
For as long as he had lived, Merik had found the Forest of Consenia peaceful and soothing. The war against the Majin obviously ruined that.

Merik's sword clashed with the many blades that belonged to the Majin's henchmen. As the last of the Hidiacs fell, Merik heard a shout nearby.

"Merik, behind you!" Merik turned around to see a tall, blue-gold being raise its blade. Merik ducked just in time as the titan brought his blade down.

Crimson eyes glaring from the being's golden helmet, the titan charged again, intent on crushing the warrior. Just as Merik prepared himself for the worst, ropes suddenly came from thin air, wrapping around the titan's legs and tripping them.

"Thanks, Calindor," Merik said as a warrior in dark blue and red armor came up behind the fallen titan.

Calindor grinned. "I do what I can. Now let's go help Daggeron and Calorak with that Chimera."

Merik nodded and began to follow Calindor when suddenly a bird-like being swooped from the air and grabbed Merik by the shoulders.

"Let me go, you dumb bird!" Merik shouted, but his captor did not reply, instead flying over the land and raging battle below.

As Merik could do nothing but wait for the being to land, he noticed that the winged one was taking him to a dark cave up ahead. The being and Merik touched ground and stood in the cave's opening.

"Any reason why you brought me here?" Merik demanded. The winged creature did not reply. Instead, it gestured to a shadowed figure within the cave.

Merik slowly stepped into the cave, but stopped when he heard the figure speak. "Hello, Merik," it said. "I've been waiting for you."

"Who are you?" Merik demanded. "How do you know my name?"

"Oh, I've known your name for a while," the being replied. "You made yourself quite well-known ever since you defeated many of my Orgs."

Merik's eyes widened slightly. "You're Majin Gorma."

"That I am," said the being, revealing himself. Grey robes wrapped around a pale, almost clay-like body. A horned crown sat onto his three-eyed head. Unlike his brethren, Gorma was only a foot taller than the average humanoid, instead of the titanic beasts the others were.

"So why am I here?" Merik asked, sword in hand.

Gorma smirked. "I know you had a brother once, did you not?"

"What's it to you?" Merik snapped.

"Well," Gorma replied, "I was just hoping a family reunion would be in order..."

The Majin stepped aside to reveal a warrior who looked not unlike Merik and wore ebony armor.

"Zarin!" Merik exclaimed. He tried to run to his brother, but Majin Gorma stopped him.

"Now, I didn't say this reunion would be without conditions," Gorma said, coldly. "You and your brother may leave in peace if you take this..." The Majin took out a wolf-like mask, colored similar to Zarin's armor. "This is the Mask of Xenaku," said Gorma. "Within this mask lies the spirit of a minor Great One, who was exiled by the others for siding with us."

"Why do you want us to take it?" Zarin asked.

Gorma was silent for a moment. "Let's just say," he finally said, "that in our hands, it'll cause too much damage even for our master to handle."

With that, Gorma gave Merik the mask and vanished.
*  *  *
Ever since that day, Merik and Zarin had found their lives more difficult. The two brothers had decided it was best not to tell the other heralds about the mask.

However, it proved to be quite hard, for Zarin had a strange attachment to the mask, always wanting to put it on. But Merik forbade him, knowing the consequences would be dangerous and severe.

"Just imagine the power it could give us!" Zarin once said. "We could be as powerful as the Great Ones!"

"But not as wise," Merik had replied. "We wouldn't be able to control that power. We'd be like the Enemy."

But, as Merik expected, Zarin did not listen, and had tried many times to put on the mask, only to be stopped by his brother. Merik knew Zarin would not stop, so he came to a difficult decision.

"Zarin, I'm telling Photus about the mask," Merik said.

Zarin gave him a look as if Merik had just called a Majin caring. "Are you mad?" Zarin exclaimed. "He'll have us exiled for having the mask!"

"Better than let its spirit wreck havoc!" Merik replied. "Now give me the mask."

"No!" Zarin shouted, unsheathing his sword.

Merik stared into his brother's eyes. "What's happened to you?" he asked, ready to defend himself if Zarin was to strike.

"When Majin Gorma captured me," Zarin said, "he showed me how powerful I could be! I could become a god!"

"No..." Merik muttered. "I won't let you do this."

"Then you'll have to die, brother," Zarin said as he charged towards Merik, sword in hand.

Merik blocked Zarin's attack with his own sword. The two brothers' duel carried for a long time, as they were almost equally matched. After hours of metal blades clashing, the fight came to a standstill.

Zarin's eyes, which were normally black, were now burning red. "I suppose there's only one way to end this," he muttered. He kicked Merik in the shins and lunged for the black mask. As he placed it on his face, Merik heard a loud scream, followed by roars of thunder.

Soon, a deep voice boomed like the thunder. "Who has awakened Xenaku, the one who has been exiled by his brethren?"

Neither Zarin nor Merik replied, as they were both frozen in shock.

Xenaku's spirit chuckled. "Well, how ironic. I've been awakened by two warriors who follow one of my brothers."

Still, neither of the two spoke, but Zarin fell to his knees.

"Ah, was it you, young one?" Xenaku asked, the thunder roaring louder. "Yes, you wear the mask which once belonged to me..." A dark smoke emitted from the mask, consuming Zarin. "Yet I know your motives. You wish to use my power for your own needs, don't you?"

The smoke dispersed and only the mask was left.

"Zarin!" Merik shouted, but he knew his brother was long gone.

"You, however..." The voice spoke to Merik. "You don't desire power, do you? No, of course not." Xenaku laughed. Merik stayed frozen. "You're a hero," said the Dark One. "You'll make the perfect host..."

Merik soon found himself enveloped by the smoke. He felt like a puppet as he unwillingly picked up the mask.

"Our task is simple," Xenaku said, his voice coming out of Merik's mouth. "We will head for Thustra, wipe out those who stood in my way, including that fool Alaric, and enslave the villages. And if the Great Majin and his followers don't interfere..."

The mask lowered over Merik's face and the world around him changed.

"We will once again be feared by all. We are now one. We are Zen-Aku!"
