Transformers Multiverse: Those Who Came Before Us

THOSE WHO CAME BEFORE US

 Earth - 2023

“I can’t be the only one who thinks this isn’t going to work.”

Crosshairs looked around the room in search of agreement. All he got were looks of despair and desperation. Bumblebee was looking down at his feet, uncharacteristically dour. Drift sat with his sword plunged into the ground, his head bowed in a vow of silence. Hound was the only one to meet his eye, and the large green Autobot only gave him an unhelpful shrug.

He glanced to his leader to see that Optimus Prime still had his back turned to all of them, deep in thought. Crosshairs wasn’t even sure if he had heard the question. The Autobot gunslinger quickly averted his gaze in order to avoid looking at the other large mech standing next to Prime, not wanting to so much as acknowledge their presence.

Ignorance is bliss, as the humans say.

Hot Rod was pacing back and forth, eventually turning to face Crosshairs. “There is precedent for it, mon ami,” he said, his voice still tinged with the French accent he had adopted from his time on Earth. “I have been reading the research done by Que and—”

“Oh, you mean the same Que that’s dead?” Crosshairs asked flippantly.

This prompted Bumblebee to look up and the yellow Autobot glared at Crosshairs as his radio clicked on. “Hey, that’s my best friend you’re talking about!

“You know you don’t have to use that damn flipping radio anymore,” Crosshairs snapped at him. “You’ve had your voice back for about a year now. Use it for god’s sake.”

Bumblebee jerked a thumb at the seventh mech in the room—the one Crosshairs refused to acknowledge the existence of. “He — don’t get to hear my voice.

“The time for grudges has long since past, Autobot,” came the voice that Crosshairs had dreaded to hear. “We have much bigger things to worry about now.”

Unable to contain himself, Crosshairs whirled on Megatron and pointed a finger at the former Decepticon leader. “And how much of that is your fault, huh? There would be a lot more of us here if it weren’t for you and your punk-ass Decepticons!”

Megatron glowered at the bright green Autobot. “I could say the same of you. You Autobots are just as bloodthirsty as my kin are.”

“Oh, don’t pull that crap on us, Megs,” Hound snapped, hefting a large cannon over his shoulder. “You started this war. You asked for everything that’s come to you and your ‘Cons. We weren’t just gonna lie down and let you ruin Cybertron—and Earth!”

“Ruin?” Megatron’s red optics blazed as he spread his arms. “Look around you, Autobots. This ruin was not done by my hand. This is all the work of the fleshlings that dwell on its rotten surface.”

Crosshairs scowled, both at Megatron’s words as well as the fact that he couldn’t argue with them. Indeed, the desolate landscape that surrounded the Autobot’s small derelict base was the work of the humans after they had once more thrown all of their goodwill with the Autobots out the window and started hunting them down again. This time, they had decided to go full “scorched Earth;” ever since word that Earth was in fact the slumbering body of Unicron had gotten out to the planetary leaders, they came to the conclusion that the Transformers were trying to turn the planet into a weapon and had resorted to every weapon at their disposal to prevent that, devastating their own planet in the process.

Some humans had stuck with the Autobots until the bitter end, such as Cade and Lennox, but they had all been hunted down for their perceived treachery. Now, the only ally the Autobots had was their sworn enemy, the last Decepticon standing after all the others had perished when the humans had used their weapons to destroy what was left of Cybertron hanging in the planet’s orbit.

As it stood now, the Autobots truly only had two options: use the Matrix of Leadership to destroy Unicron—and thus Earth—once and for all… or to risk everything with the plan that Megatron had just proposed, with Hot Rod being the only one so far to corroborate it.

“And how do we know this little idea of yours isn’t just some ploy to rule the world again, huh?” Hound questioned.

“What world is there to rule?” Megatron snarled back.

“Well, at least two, ‘cos if what you’re suggesting works, it will restore both Cybertron and Earth back to way things were.”

“Not just those planets, but our society. There will be no more Autobots or Decepticons; only Cybertronians. Our people will be at peace again, as they should have been long ago.”

Crosshairs shook his head, unwilling to believe any of it. “And what exactly gave you the idea of time travel of all things?”

Megatron bowed his head. “When I was nothing more than a head kept in the captivity of those gnats at Kinetic Solutions Incorporated… before they remade me into Galvatron… I learned of some of the other technology they had blueprinted but never got the chance to develop. Not only did they seek to recreate our race but our technology as well… including space bridges.”

“So? All of the pillars were destroyed ten years ago, I’m pretty sure.”

“Most, but not all. One still remained in the possession of that… human you called Sir Burton.”

“You killed Sir Burton, meutrier,” Hot Rod said darkly.

“Indeed. Which meant that his castle was ripe for the taking. Before the other humans destroyed his castle and the Cybertronians he kept in his care, I managed to recover the Pillar he had kept with him.” Megatron reached behind his back and produced the artifact itself. By all appearances, it was a legitimate space bridge pillar and not just a replica as some of Burton’s possessions allegedly were according to Hot Rod.

“If my theory is correct,” the Decepticon leader continued, “a theory which is backed up by research from both Shockwave and Wheelja— Que, then by combining the energies of this Pillar with Hot Rod’s time-freezing weapon, we will be able to transport at least one of us back in time in order to prevent the outbreak of the Great War, thus saving both our worlds.”

“And what about Unicron?” Hound asked, gesturing to the ground at their feet. “He’ll still be sleeping within Earth, won’t he?”

“Perhaps. But so long as we find a way to destroy Quintessa again in the process, then this world will be spared. As far as I know, she is the only one who knew of Unicron before any of us.”

“See, this is what I don’t like about the plan,” Crosshairs said. “What if you’re wrong and there are others out there who know and will try to awaken him? I mean, where does this Quintessa lady even come from? What if there are others like her?”

Megatron’s optics dimmed, possibly deep in thought. When he spoke again, his voice was quieter than usual. “When I was found by Quintessa… when she remade me into Megatron, she told me that she was the last of the Creators—the Quintessons as they were called. I know not when her kind went extinct, but she made it seem as if it was many eons ago….”

“And you think she was telling the truth?” Hound asked. “What was it those Guardian Knights called her, Optimus? The Prime of Lies or something like that?”

Optimus Prime said nothing, his back still turned to the rest of them. Even Megatron was regarding his lifelong enemy with a skeptical—almost concerned—look.

“Prime?” Crosshairs said carefully. “What do you think about all this?”

At last, Optimus Prime turned to look at the five Autobots under his command and his forever nemesis. His blue optics were dim, almost lifeless, and his voice was as haggard as his battered appearance. “Do you have faith in this plan, Hot Rod?”

The black and orange Autobot hesitated for a moment before nodding. “Oui, monsieur.

Optimus then turned his eye to Megatron, who met his gaze evenly. “In that case… I will put my trust in you one last time, Megatron. If this succeeds… then you will forever be in my debt. If it doesn’t….”

Megatron smirked. “I already know what you are capable of, Prime. I have faith that you will be able to finish me off for good. After all, third time’s the charm, is it not?”

Bumblebee whirred sadly as he shook his head. “I have a really bad feeling about this.”

Earth - 17,000 BC

“The planet is inhabited. We must abandon it.”

“What?” The Prime’s exclamation startled his brothers, who looked to him with confusion and concern. “But their star is ripe! Its energy will keep Cybertron energized for centuries—millennia even!”

“You know the sanctity of life, brother,” said Prima, first of the Primes. “You swore the same oath as all of us—to protect and preserve life across the universe.”

Nova Prime clenched his fists, eyes blazing with fury. “The natives of this planet are nothing more than primitive gnats! Their erasure from the universe will be missed no more than a droplet of water in an ocean full of it!”

“All life is sacred, Nova, regardless the level of their sapience.” Guardian Prime motioned with his arms to the world around them. “The trees, the birds, the insects… all must be protected. That is our vow.”

Nova narrowed his optics. “And what of parasites? Even Insecticons must be exterminated when they pose too much of a threat. There must be limitations to the sanctity of life; how will we know when we find it?”

“Now is not the time for this debate,” Prima said sharply. “We may discuss this further upon our return to Cybertron. For now, we must dismantle the Star Harvester and abscond from this planet.”

The five other Primes agreed with their leader and Nova knew he was outvoted. He fumed in silence as they dispersed and returned to their posts. Standing in the middle of the desert, surrounded by the pathetic little lifeforms, he stared up at the sun, basking in its energy.

“They are blinded by their virtues,” the voice in his head said. “They refuse to see the truth in your words.”

“How do I make them see?” Nova Prime growled.

“There is no point. You must take control for yourself. Only then will they recognize your power.”

“Power. Yes.” A sinister smile crossed Nova Prime’s visage. “They will know my power.”

The ground trembled beneath his feet.

“And mine.”

Earth - 2023

This is heavy, doc.”

“I don’t hear you coming up with any ideas,” Crosshairs retorted.

Bumblebee stayed silent as he and his fellow Autobots (and Megatron) gathered in what was left of Stonehenge, where the Autobots and Decepticons had held their last battle a year ago. So much had happened in the span of a year that it had made his head spin. He had lost so many friends in such a short span of time—Cade, Tessa, Lennox… he still hadn’t even gotten over losing Sam, Mikaela and Carly, not to mention all of his fellow Autobots. Ironhide, Jazz, Ratchet, Sideswipe….

All of it made him almost apathetic as to whether or not Megatron’s plan succeeded or not. What difference would it have made anyway? Earth and Cybertron were already lost and most of their race was dead. And if the plan worked, then they probably would forget everything they had gone through up to this point. All of the good as well as the bad….

Without even realizing it, Bumblebee started playing the third movement of Chopin’s Piano Sonata No. 2 from his radio. Crosshairs immediately smacked him on the back of his head.

“Come off it, already. We don’t need you bringing down the mood any more than it already is!”

“Leave him alone, Crosshairs,” Hound rumbled. “Let the boy grieve in peace.”

Crosshairs grumbled under his breath but said nothing further on the matter. Stepping into the center of Stonehenge’s ruins, Megatron planted the Pillar into the ground. It split apart and hovered up as it powered on. He then stepped aside to allow Hot Rod to hook up the power cell of his time-freezing gun to the space bridge device.

“I know now’s probably not an appropriate time to ask,” Hound muttered, “but how exactly did you get your hands on that doo-hickey anyway? I’ve seen loads of guns in my life, but none quite like that.”

Hot Rod glanced at him. “Have you heard of the Seekers?”

“I think so.” Hound looked at Bumblebee. “What was that name of the old fart you guys fought with back in Egypt? Skyfire? Jetfire?”

Bumblebee nodded, wagging his finger in the air. “Hey. I know that guy.

“Right. Yeah. I remember Wheelie telling us about them. They were really old guys who had space bridges built into them or something.” Hound looked back to Hot Rod. “What about them?”

“I was one of them.”

“You?” Crosshairs exclaimed. “But those guys were ancient. You’re a young ‘bot by my count—same as Bumblebee.”

Hot Rod chuckled. “Merci, mon ami. Indeed, I was the last of the Seekers to be created and wasn’t operational for long before I was sent here with the others to search for the Matrix. I was never trained to master my space bridge abilities, and instead I ended up channeling my energy through my weapon, allowing me to stop the time.”

Megatron scowled. “Unless this conversation serves a purpose, then I suggest you focus on getting this done rather than waste our time. The humans are still on the hunt for us and may be upon us at any moment.”

Oui, oui,” Hot Rod said irritably. “One thing I must point out, however: this will only be able to teleport one bot at a time. We would require more pillars if we wished to send the rest of us. If needed, I can set it so that each of us only has a certain amount of time to do whatever we need to do before we’re pulled back to the present. Otherwise, whoever we send will be trapped in the past.”

“Do what you need to,” Optimus Prime said. “The rest of us will stay out here to guard the Pillar in case any humans come our way.”

Crosshairs raised a hand. “Let me ask a question: What the hell are we going to be doing in the past? Are we supposed to change history or something?”

“The key will be to prevent any of our artifacts from reaching Earth,” said Megatron. “The AllSpark, the Matrix, the Pillars… if we can eliminate any reason for our two worlds to collide, then both will be saved in the process.”

“So, in other words, undo all of your mistakes.” Hound chuckled. “At least you’re somewhat self-aware….”

Crosshairs folded his arms, nodding slightly. “Right. Okay. That’s a start, at least. So we do that and just… avoid running into our past selves?”

Hot Rod shrugged. “Je suppose.”

“Sounds simple enough,” said Hound. “So, who wants to go first?”

Drift stepped forward. “I will volunteer,” he said somberly.

Crosshairs rolled his eyes. “Well, it looks like someone finally found their voice.”

Hot Rod nodded. “Very well. Just put your hand on the Pillar after I—”

Before he had even finished speaking, Drift had placed his hand on the Pillar. In a flash of light, the black-and-red Autobot samurai was gone.

“…set the time.”

Bumblebee moaned in despair. “Ay caramba.

Earth - 1867

“So… what is your name, friend?”

The black-and-red-armored samurai traced his sword in the dirt. “Drift.”

The other samurai nodded. “Well, Drift, you may call me Wing. It has been many years since I have seen another Cybertronian.”

Drift lifted his head up, gazing at the sun as it set beneath the horizon. “How long have you been here?”

“Oh, I have long since lost count of the years. Centuries, perhaps. Maybe even longer.”

“Do you know why you are here?”

“I was sent to find something.” Wing’s own gaze wandered off as his mind reached back through the years. “I can barely remember… something called the Matrix, I believe?”

“The Matrix of Leadership?”

“That was it, yes. The last gift of the Primes.” Wing chuckled as he shook his head. “I lost the trail so long ago. We all did. The others started fighting amongst themselves and I… I decided to just stay here. Embrace the culture. Mingle with the locals.”

Drift nodded slowly. “Hm. I like the sound of that. Besides…” He smiled as he finished drawing the Autobot symbol in the sand. “I have all the time in the world.”

Earth - 2023

“Shouldn’t he be back by now?” Crosshairs demanded.

Hot Rod shook his head. “He touched it before I could set the time! There’s no way for me to bring him back!”

“So what, he’s just stuck there now?” Crosshairs swore as he punched one of the few stones that still stood in Stonehenge. “Damn it, we can’t do anything right!”

“Calm down,” Optimus Prime urged, although even his voice sounded somewhat shaky. “Hot Rod, make sure you set the time for the next trip. Hound, I will have you go next. Perhaps you can help bring back Drift while you’re at it—”

“That would defeat the purpose, Prime,” Megatron snarled. “We are already altering history. It will not matter where we end up for it will all be overwritten once our plan succeeds.”

“How do we know you’re not just trying to get rid of us?” Crosshairs drew his guns and pointed them at Megatron. “That sounds like something you would do, doesn’t it?”

“Crosshairs, stand down!” Optimus ordered. “Now is not the time for us to fight among ourselves!”

“Megatron isn’t one of us! Have you gone mad, Prime?”

Optimus ignored him as he turned to Hot Rod. “Has the time been set?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Hound?”

“Already on it.” Hound stepped towards the Pillar. “If any fighting happens, leave some of Megatron for me, okay?”

He touched the Pillar, and he was gone.

Earth - 1944

“Hey! I’m on your guys’ side!” Hound cried over the sound of his gatling gun. “Can’t we just talk this out?”

The bot who looked a lot like Hot Rod—albeit with the alt mode of some old German war vehicle rather than a modern day sports car—let out a battle cry as he charged at Hound, unloading his own weapon at the other Autobot. Charging behind him was an Autobot with a dull green color scheme that looked a lot like Bumblebee, raising a hammer high above his head.

Hot Rod came up to him first and Hound bashed him aside with the butt of his gatling gun. He then thrust his rotund midsection out to knock Bumblebee to the ground. With both of them down, he aimed his cannon at both of them but did not fire. He then pointed a finger at the red, white and black flags that were waving around them.

“These are the bad guys, right? Nazis they’re called, right? Well, I fight Nazis too where I come from, except we call them Decepticons. You guys know what Decepticons are, don’t you?”

Struggling to get back onto his feet, Hot Rod gave him a confused look. “Decepticons? Quoi?”

Hound looked to Bumblebee. “C’mon, ‘Bee. You know who the ‘Cons are, don’t ya’?”

Back on his feet, Bumblebee dropped his hammer head first into the ground before slowly nodding. He whirred and beeped in what humans referred to as Morse code, which Hound fortunately had some understanding of.

“It’s a long story, ‘Bee. Where I come from… things are lookin’ pretty bad. I’m here to set things right.”

Hot Rod looked over to Bumblebee. “You know this guy, mon ami?”

Bumblebee nodded. Hot Rod looked back to Hound.

“Well, in that case… a friend of ‘Bee’s is a friend of mine. Please, tell us your story, mon ami, and perhaps we can help you.”

Hound chuckled as he set down his weapon. “All right, but you’d better buckle in. I’ve only got a limited amount of time and it’s quite a wild tale to tell….”

Earth - 2023

Mon dieu. This is not good.”

“What is it, Hot Rod?” Optimus Prime asked.

“The Pillar is becoming unstable,” Hot Rod replied, staring at the device as the energy around crackled a shade of purple rather than the usual blue. “If Que’s research is anything to go by, then it means that the timestream is falling apart. Becoming fractured.”

“Okaaay,” Crosshairs said. “And what the hell is that supposed to mean? Is Hound stuck in the past, too?”

“Not necessarily. But it might mean that when the timer is up, he’ll be sent to a different year rather than back here. It will be randomized as to where he will end up.” Hot Rod tapped his head. “There’s… something else as well.”

Bumblebee whirred in agreement. “Something’s wrong, I can feel it.”

Crosshairs frowned as he looked between both of them. “What are you guys talking about?”

“History is already being altered, and it is affecting our memory banks,” Hot Rod explained. “’Bee and I can now recall encountering Hound many years ago, whereas before we did not.”

“Is that a good thing or a bad thing?”

“It depends on how things unfold. And with the Pillar acting how it is… well, I don’t have a good feeling about it.”

Crosshairs aimed a glare at Megatron, his fingers still wrapped around the handles of his pistols. “Is this all going according to plan for you, Megs?”

Megatron did not humor him with a response, his eyes focused on the unstable Pillar. Optimus Prime looked towards Hot Rod.

“Is it safe for you to send another one of us back in time?” the Autobot leader asked.

Hot Rod hesitated before shaking his head. “I would not recommend it, monsieur. I fear that another trip will only make things worse.”

“We are already so close,” Megatron growled. “We cannot give up now! You Autobots haven’t even tried to make the best use of your time!”

“Maybe your plan just sucks,” Crosshairs grunted. “Ever think of that?”

Megatron glowered at the green Autobot… and then a sinister smile bisected his face. “Does it, Autobot? Or perhaps it has already succeeded.”

Optimus Prime glared at him. “What are you talking about, Megatron?”

“Until now, I had thought Shockwave’s theories to be the thing of madness,” the Decepticon leader murmured, more to himself than to any of the others. “I should congratulate him when I cross paths with him again.”

“Yeah, uh, except Shockwave’s dead,” Crosshairs pointed out. “All of your Decepticons are dead.”

“Life and death no longer have any meaning, Autobot,” Megatron replied. “Except for yours.”

He then pointed his arm cannon at Crosshairs and fired. The green Autobot’s body was instantly blown apart into dozens of pieces.

Bumblebee whirred in anger as he charged at Megatron, deploying his hammer. “You bastard!

He lunged at Megatron only to be blasted away by another shot from the Decepticon leader’s arm cannon. Optimus Prime let out a wail of anger as he moved to tackle his nemesis only to be easily knocked aside, the Autobot leader weakened by countless years of fighting and an eon’s worth of despair. Megatron then stepped forward and grabbed Hot Rod, hoisting him up in the air.

“Consider this a mercy, Autobot,” Megatron growled into his face. “A signal of gratitude for helping me accomplish my victory.”

He then tossed the black and orange Autobot aside before approaching the Pillar, putting his hand through the unstable violet energy to touch the device.

“Decepticons, mobilize. Our triumph is at hand!”

Earth - 1913

“What… what is this madness?”

Starscream looked around, confused as to where he was. Just moments ago he had been clashing with the Autobots in the middle of Mission City, and yet now he was here. He was still on Earth, that much he could tell, but the technology and vehicles were much more primitive compared to the already low-quality machines he already knew of this wretched planet. Around him, humans were running in terror from his presence, but that much wasn’t new or unexpected.

Carelessly stepping on some of the fleeing fleshlings, he continued to observe his surroundings before laying optics on another mechanoid. Their dull purple armor plating and single red optics made their identity immediately obvious.

“Shockwave?!” Starscream exclaimed. “What in the blazes are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be on Cybertron?”

Shockwave disregarded him as he observed his own surroundings. “Interesting,” he murmured. “Perhaps my hypothesis was correct after all.”

“Hypothesis?! What in the blazes are you talking about?”

There was a flash of light and a third mech joined their number. Starscream’s optics immediately went wide; although his appearance was different from what Starscream was familiar with, there was no mistaking his identity.

“M-Megatron? W-what are you doing here? What is the meaning of this?”

Megatron ignored him as he turned his attention to Shockwave. “Your theories have seen fruition, my friend. I have already succeeded in tricking the Autobots to disperse their numbers across history. The timestream is fracturing as we speak.”

“So I’ve noticed,” Shockwave replied. “What would you have us do, my liege?”

“I already know the location of the AllSpark in this time, as well as the Matrix of Leadership and the Star Harvester. We shall use those to bring about our victory.”

“And the Ark?”

“Sentinel Prime and his crew have not yet arrived in this time, I’m afraid. But no matter; we shall address that issue shortly.”

Starscream sputtered in confusion. “The Ark? I… I don’t understand any of this—”

Megatron struck him in the face with his arm. “You never have,” he growled. “Just do as I command, Starscream, and do not waste my time with your useless questions! Besides, if you and Shockwave have fallen through these fractures, then so will the Autobots. They will continue to be a nuisance until we have finished our plan.”

Shockwave charged his arm cannon. “They shall be dealt with, Lord Megatron.”

“Excellent.” The Decepticon leader grinned. “I will leave you to it then.”

With that, he converted to his jet mode and took off into the sky. Starscream watched him go with an utter look of confusion before turning his attention to Shockwave.

“Please tell me I’m not the only one who has no idea what’s going on.”

“Please,” Shockwave muttered. “Spare my audio receptors from your useless babbling.”

Earth - 2023

“’Bee? Come on, mon ami, wake up.”

Bumblebee’s optics flickered back on to see Hot Rod standing over him. Around him, his body was reassembling itself after Megatron had blasted him apart. “What did I do last night?

“You don’t need to use your radio. Megatron is gone. He… he used the Pillar to go back in time.”

This prompted Bumblebee to stand up, now fully in one piece again. “We have to go after him.”

“There might be a chance the two of us can both use it at the same time,” Hot Rod said. “But there’s no telling where or when Megatron has gone to. Time is fracturing all around us; my memory banks are still constantly updating with events that never happened.”

Bumblebee looked around, his optics passing over the remains of Crosshairs before landing on Optimus Prime. The Autobot leader lay motionless, staring up at the darkened sky with dim blue optics.

“Prime?” Bumblebee cautiously stepped forward. “Come on, get up. We need to go after Megatron.”

Optimus Prime said nothing at first, and for a moment Bumblebee wondered if he had shut himself offline. Then, his chest plates slid open and Optimus reached inside to retrieve the Matrix of Leadership. He handed it to Bumblebee.

“Take it.”

Bumblebee’s eyes went wide. “What? Prime… no. I can’t. I… I’m not worthy….”

“Nor… was I.” Optimus’ voice was weak and strained, as if he was struggling to get the words out. As if he was fighting something in order to say anything. “But I trust you with it, Bumblebee. You and Hot Rod. Keep it safe. Keep it out of the wrong hands.”

Bumblebee stared at the Matrix in Prime’s hands, unable—unwilling—to believe what he was hearing. “What about you?” he asked quietly.

“I….” Optimus winced. Was it from pain? He didn’t look that beat up…. “I must stay here. I vowed to protect this planet until the end. And that is what I will do.”

Bumblebee hesitated for a long moment before reluctantly taking the Matrix from his leader’s hand. He did not place it in his own chest but instead simply held it in his arms.

“Now… go.” Optimus pointed weakly at the Pillar. “Do what you can… to stop Megatron. Our worlds… our universe… depend on it.”

Bumblebee took a moment to look Prime in the eyes, knowing it would probably be the last. “It… it has been an honor serving under you, Prime. I will not let you down.”

Optimus smiled sadly. “I know you won’t, ‘Bee. I know you won’t.”

Hot Rod stepped forward and placed a hand on Bumblebee’s shoulder. “Come on, ‘Bee. We must hurry if we hope to stop Megatron.”

Bumblebee nodded and, with one last look to Optimus, he walked over to the Pillar with Hot Rod. As one, they placed their hands on the device, and in an instant, they were gone.

Earth - 1805

“This makes no sense.”

“I hear ya,” Hound said.

Ironhide unfurled his cannons to blast away an incoming Decepticon. “I mean, how is any of this even happening?”

“I wish I could explain, but I don’t think I would be able to do it justice.” Hound loaded another clip into his machine gun. “I wish Que or someone would show up. That would probably make this easier to understand.”

Ironhide snorted. “I wouldn’t count on it. I never understand half of the things he says.”

“Point taken.”

There was a flash of energy and the two Autobots were joined by another of their number. Hound instantly recognized his leader, although his appearance was not the same as when he had left the present day. Rather, his body was that of his first five years on Earth. Upon noticing the attacking Decepticons, Optimus Prime deployed his arm blades.

“Ironhide?” the Autobot leader started to say.

“Your guess is as good as mine, Prime,” Ironhide replied.

“That’s what I was afraid of.”

“I know this is all really confusing,” Hound said. “If you ask me, just focus on blasting apart Decepticons. That’s a language I think we can all understand.”

Ironhide grinned. “Now you’re talking.”

Earth - 1913

Megatron transformed to his robot mode and landed on the desert ground. His mouth curled up into a grin as his optics laid upon the massive, cube-shaped AllSpark, laying in the spot where the future Hoover Dam would one day be constructed.  And it never would be constructed, should he have anything to say about it.

“At last,” he rumbled, stepping towards the ancient artifact. “After all these years, you are finally mine.”

He started to step towards it only to hear a burst of energy behind him. Narrowing his optics, he looked over his shoulder to see Hot Rod and Bumblebee pointing their weapons at him.

“You are already too late, Autobots,” the Decepticon leader growled. “I have already won.”

“You call this chaos victory?” Hot Rod snapped. “A strange strategy, if you ask me.”

Megatron shook his head. “’Strategy’ was never the point, Autobot. All I ever wanted was to rule. The means to acquire that goal were never important. Whether it was the AllSpark, the Fallen’s Star Harvester, or Sentinel Prime’s space bridge… they were all merely options at my disposal. Contingency plans upon contingency plans. This was simply another means to an end.”

“I guess you and logic don’t get along very well.”

Megatron chuckled darkly. “Shockwave is the one ruled by logic. I am merely ruled by lust for power. And that power is now within inches from my grasp.”

Bumblebee whirred angrily. “Not if anything to say about it I have.

Tossing the Matrix he held over to Hot Rod, he charged towards Megatron, firing his cannon as he ran. Megatron growled in annoyance as he readied his own arm cannon and swung it to point it directly at the yellow Autobot’s face. Hot Rod cried out in alarm as he moved in to intercept the Decepticon leader’s shot.

Around them, time fragmented and the scenery shifted. No longer were they standing in the Nevada desert but were now standing in the middle of the Arctic, where Megatron himself had crash-landed many years ago. Bumblebee ducked and slid across the ice to avoid the blast from Megatron’s cannon before firing from his own weapon, striking the Decepticon leader several times in the chest. Hot Rod then jumped over Bumblebee’s head and took his own shot at Megatron, hitting him in the head.

Time changed around them again, and they were now all in a lush green field. As Megatron primed his arm cannon for another attack, there was a flash of light behind him and a dark gray metal fist flew into his face. Energon sputtered from Megatron’s mouth as the Decepticon leader staggered back from the unexpected assault and he readjusted his optics to get a better look at his assailant.

“You…?” he started to say.

“Me,” Ironhide replied as he unfurled his cannons and fired them at Megatron.

Megatron snarled in anger as he pointed his arm cannon at the Autobot. He only got a few shots in when he was attacked again from behind, this time by a small silver Autobot who jumped onto his back.

“You want a piece of me?!” Jazz cried as he fired at Megatron’s head with his arm gun.

Megatron reached behind him to pull Jazz off. Before he could finish off the Autobot as he had fifteen years ago, another portal dispersed the Autobots Sideswipe, Dino, and Drift. The three blade-wielding Autobots lunged at the Decepticon leader and slashed at his armor with their swords, causing Megatron to release his grip on Jazz.

“Impossible. Where are you all coming from?” As the world changed around him once more, the green field turning into a golden desert, Megatron raised his arms to the sky. “Decepticons! To me!”

No Decepticons came to him, and instead Ratchet fell from the sky to drive his axe into his shoulder. Megatron cried out in agony before swinging an arm to swat the Autobot medic aside. Before he could unleash his fury on his attackers, a red and blue figure appeared before him and his red optical sensors went wide.

“Prime—”

Before the name could even leave his vocal processor, Optimus Prime drove a blade straight into his chest, right through his spark chamber. Gasping in pain, Megatron fell back, his vision becoming blurry as the world spun around him. He fell to his knees, and through his hazy vision he could barely make out the remains of his fellow Decepticons. Shockwave, Starscream, Soundwave…. Standing over them were the rest of the Autobots, pulled from all across time, alive and dead. All of them had their weapons drawn and pointed at him, ready to pull the trigger should he make a move.

“No….” He coughed, energon leaking from his mouth onto the ground. “I was so close… the power was mine….”

He looked around. He was back where the AllSpark had landed… only the Cube was not there. He looked up to the sky and saw it falling from the sky, heading straight for the ground.

“This is it, boys!” Hound cried out. “Time to set things right!”

“Yeah, and just how are we gonna do that?” asked Sideswipe. “I don’t see any of us flying up to it in time.”

Hot Rod drew his time gun and held up the Matrix of Leadership. “This is going to be crazy,” he murmured. “But sometimes… des Å“uvres folles.”

With that, he loaded up the ancient relic into his gun, pointed it at the descending AllSpark, and pulled the trigger.

Megatron could only watch as victory was once more ripped from his grasp… and the world fell away around him.

Earth - 2009

The Fallen raised his hands to the burning Sun, the Star Harvester humming to life beneath him. Clouds of stone and dirt swirled around him.

“And now,” he rumbled, “I claim your sun!”

Suddenly, the world froze around him. Time seemed to come to a stand still as the eldritch voice he had listened to for so long spoke into his mind.

“You have failed me.”

“No,” the Fallen murmured. “Master, I am so close. Soon, you shall be awakened—!”

“You will fail, just as you already have. I no longer have use for you.”

Everything fell around the Fallen; the pyramid crumbled beneath his feet as the Star Harvester faded out of existence. The once and former Nova Prime cried out in despair as he fell endlessly into the abyss of time and space.

“Besides… I have already found another.”

All he could do was cry out as the world suddenly became very, very cold around him…

Earth - 2023

Optimus Prime laid on the ground as the world fell apart around him. Earth was shedding its organic surface, revealing the metallic carapace that laid underneath. On either side of the globe, a massive horn broke from the ground and rose towards the sky.

There was no stopping it this time. Unicron had awakened. Earth was gone, and he had failed its people.

But, even in this darkest hour… there was light. He could sense Unicron’s discomfort, and he knew then that the others had succeeded.

“Do not be too hasty in your celebration, Prime,” Unicron spoke into his mind. “This reality may soon be no more… but I will find the new one that your Autobots have created. And it shall suffer the same fate as this one.”

“I have faith in them,” Optimus Prime said defiantly. “They will find a way to stop you… just as they always have.”

“We shall see. But until then….”

Optimus cried out in pain as he felt himself lifting up from the ground. The eyes of Unicron blazed brightly in his mind.

“I have need of a new herald. One who shall serve as my scourge across the universe.”

He could feel his body change and shift around him, his red and blue armor plating turning a dull shade of metal.

“Remnants of Quintessa’s control still linger in your mind. Your secret bloodlust, your hidden resentment against mankind for their treachery… you shall hide these feelings no more. You will be fully unrestrained; a beast made to answer my every beck and call.”

Optimus Prime could already feel the last vestiges of his mind fading away, supplanted by the dark persona that Quintessa had already planted within him, nurtured now by Unicron’s every word.

“Awaken… my Scourge.”

With his last conscious thought, he prayed that the Autobots of the new world would defend it from the coming chaos. Then, Optimus Prime thought no more.

Earth - 1987

The sun rose on a brand new world.

Bumblebee stood on the edge of a hill, looking out towards the city of San Francisco, thinking of the friend he had been forced to leave behind. He never liked having to make such sacrifices… but for her safety, it was one that had to be made.

Behind him, he could hear the newly arrived Autobots chatting among themselves, discussing and comparing their new alternate modes as well as their future plans. He heard the sound of large footsteps approaching him and he looked up to see Optimus Prime standing beside him.

“You are still thinking about your friend, aren’t you?” the Autobot leader questioned softly.

Bumblebee looked away from him, telegraphing his sadness with a quiet whir.

“I understand, old friend. But sometimes we must sacrifice our connections in order to preserve them. Perhaps once this war is over, and the Decepticons are well and truly defeated, you will be able to return to her. But until then….”

He trailed off and Bumblebee braced himself for another platitude. He then glanced up at Prime and saw instead that the large red and blue Autobot was looking off into the distance, a disquieted expression in his optics. Bumblebee whirred a question and Optimus Prime shook himself out of his brief stupor.

“My apologies, friend,” Prime said. “It’s just that… there’s something about this world that feels familiar. I just can’t put my finger on it….”

Bumblebee had felt the familiarity as well. He had tried to think back as to when he would have ever come across a planet that was so full of life, with lush green forests and flowing blue oceans.

But then he remembered that though out his entire life, he had never once set foot off of Cybertron. And then the feeling was gone.

Transformers Regenerated Multiverse: The Fanon AllSpark Almanac

AUTOBOTS

Clipper

Clipper is not a femme you should underestimate. A lot of 'bots overlook her because she's the secretary to Governor Riker, but they don't know that she fought bolts and nails to get to that position. She and I have crossed paths on more than one occasion given our respective positions, and let me tell you she knows how to get her way and get it quick. I'm not much for gossip, but there are some rumors that she's the one who calls the shots at Riker's office and I wouldn't go so far as to count that possibility out entirely. People say she's got her eyes on a seat (or something close to it) on the High Council; AllSpark preserve the Magnus whenever that happens. - Chromia

Groove

I don't trust Groove. He means well, don't get me wrong. But he's one of those "free spirit" 'bots who's a little bit too free, if you ask me. His easy-going nature has gotten him into trouble in the past, and he's nearly gotten himself sent to the Stockade more than once. Out of all of us Protectobots, he's the one whose membership I question the most. Hopefully our Magnus knows what he's doing by putting us all together. - Rook

Hoist

Hoist is a 'bot you always want to have around, especially if you don't have a medical officer on hand. He's more than happy to fix you up if you need a quick routine checkup or some maintenance work done. I don't think I've ever met a more cheerful 'bot in my life. He's probably one of the few Elite Guard bots who hasn't let the fame get to his head. And hey, he's earned his spot! Lately there's been some rumblings that a bot in some of Sentinel Prime-- er, Sentinel Magnus' political videos is supposed to be Hoist, but... c'mon. I hear the bot's got dreams of performing on the stage, but they have completely different body-types. I swear, the things you hear at the Old Oil House.... - Swerve

Hosehead

HOSEHEAD IS A VERY NICE BOT! HE IS ALWAYS APOLOGIZING FOR THINGS EVEN WHEN IT'S NOT HIS FAULT! HE IS QUITE BRAVE AND COURAGEOUS, BUT SOMETIMES GETS FLUSTERED WHEN UNDER PRESSURE! HE IS EQUIPPED WITH VERY EFFICIENT FIRE RETARDANT! WHAT DO YOU MEAN, "KEEP IT DOWN?" - Siren

Hot Spot

Hot Spot is the leader of us Protectobots and the most experienced of us. He fought in the Great War and took part in the Battle of Iacon, where he lost his Omega Sentinel. Some people say his crew had to drag him off the ship before it exploded. He's spent most of his years in retirement since then, so it was a surprise to pretty much everyone when Sentinel Magnus recommissioned him to serve as the leader of his Protectobot guard. Between you and me, I personally feel he isn't mentally suited for command. Combine his trauma with his selfless need to charge into battle... I fear that is going to be the death of him. - First Aid

Lifeline

Ah, Lifeline. That's a name I haven't heard in a long time. We served together during the war, rushing out onto the field to repair fallen Autobots in the middle of combat. She has always detested war and was something of a pacifist, although she knew how to fight when push came to shove. She was a very vocal opponent of the Magnus and fiercely condemned Project: Omega, which we had a bit of a falling out over due to my... involvement. After the war, she retired to Paradron, and we've been able to patch things up since then. I haven't heard from her since arriving on Earth. Maybe it's time to change that...  - Ratchet

Siren

Siren's a great guy, don't get me wrong. It's just that he's, well... kind of loud. Very loud. Sorry, someone had to say it. To be fair, it's not something that's easy for him to control. I'm sure if I grew up in the Sonic Canyons, I would have my voice modulator permanently set on a high volume by default. Arcee's been trying to get him to mind his surroundings whenever he's speak, and to his credit he's been doing his best. You can't fault him for that. He gets along pretty well with Nightbeat and is always the first to tag along with her in her investigations. He's usually the one to provide the most reasonable explanation while Nightbeat does her big brain module thinking. - Hosehead

Sunstreaker

Sunstreaker and I go way back, all the way to our days in boot camp. Even back then she was a bit full of herself, although she's mellowed out in the years since. She got her name 'cos she polished her armor so much the sun gleamed off her and nearly shorted out our drill sergeant's optical sensors. We were both pretty young and stupid during those days and would pull pranks on our fellow cadets. During the war, we applied our pranking skills to Decepticon fighting and developed the "Jet Judo" maneuver. Sunstreaker likes to take credit for that one, although I'm pretty sure I came up with the name. These days, Sunstreaker's been living life as a socialite, frequenting the same gossiping circles as 'bots like Tracks. I still message her every now and then, just to see how life's been treating her. - Sideswipe

DECEPTICONS

Cop-Tur

No one really knows where Cop-Tur came from. He just kind of... showed up. Same deal as Crasher. In fact, those two were always hanging around each other and asking others about Cy-Kill for some reason. Strange. Anyway, Cop-Tur wasn't exactly the brightest sort, but he made up for it in sheer strength, making him an ideal member of the Decepticon Heavy Brigade. No one's seen him since the Great War, and many've just assumed he died with the rest of 'em. I can certainly tell you that no one's been missing him. - Spittor

Lyzack

Rumor has it that the Autobots have begun developing their own flying soldiers. It would be funny if it weren't so pathetic. Still, reports of these two Autobot twins being able to form this combiner known as "Safeguard" have a few of us warlords concerned, myself included. As such, I have dedicated the resources and research necessary to create a Decepticon combiner of our own. The twins Lyzack and Leozack have volunteered for this operation, and Drillhorn has already come up with schematics for a gestalt that has been given the designation "Liokaiser." Soon, the Autobots will learn that the Decepticons will always maintain superiority in the skies!  - Deathsaurus

Rampage

Rampage is the embodiment of the Autobots and their foolhardiness. During the Great War, prior to creating Project Omega, they attempted to counter the Decepticon Heavy Brigade by forcing a protoform into the Heavy Brigade body-type. However, the resulting creation was a violent monster that went on a rampage through Iacon, halted only by the efforts of Depth Charge and his team. To cover up their failure, the Autobots fabricated a backstory for Protoform X, labeling him an escaped Decepticon named Rampage, and interred him in Trypticon Prison's most secure cell. Many times have I been tempted to release him in order to expose the Autobots as the fools they are, but Lord Megatron insists that he remain where he is, as the destruction he could bring would be a detriment to even the Decepticons. - Shockwave

Runabout & Runamuck

Oh, these two losers. There is nothing to say about Runabout and Runamuck. Or is it Runamuck and Runabout? Beats me. They are little more than two street thugs that signed up for the Decepticons because they thought it would get them somewhere in life, when really they're nothing more than cannon fodder. They are prone to pointless bantering and laughing at their own crude jokes. You won't see me shedding a tear when these two inevitably get themselves scrapped. In fact, I might even crack a smile. - Starscream

Slicer

Magnificus was not ze only result of Operation: Doppelganger. When Shockwave retrieved the CNA of Perceptor, he also acquired samples of his partner Wheeljack. Slicer was created from these samples as a test run for the project. Unfortunately, he was not as much of a success as Magnificus; while a capable fighter, Slicer iz extremely single-minded and can only focus on one thing: destroying whatever is in front of him, whether it be Autobot or Decepticon. He ultimately became too much of a nuisance that he was sent to Ijarn with Magnificus to serve as his bodyguard. Hopefully Magnificus can get him to focus his processor and control his quick temper. - Scalpel

MIRROR AUTOBOTS

MIRROR DECEPTICONS

Mirror Soundwave

Ugh, so lame. Soundwave was a robot that Dad made for me to bash around with, until that goody-two shoe Megatron got his hands on him. Now Soundwave's all about making people happy and sweet and stuff. What a loser. To make matters worse, he worked with those H.Y.B.R.I.D. nobodies and tried to turn Optimus and his 'bots good with some sort of VR world. Thankfully Bulkhead smashed him to pieces, so I don't have to listen to his poser music anymore. Good riddance. - Mirror Universe Sari

From the Archives: Transformers Beyond - A Space Oddity (unfinished story)

Capping off the year with an unfinished story. A Regenerated reboot that never went anywhere. Started writing on January 29, 2018; not sure when I abandoned it. Only wrote five chapters.

I: FAR ABOVE THE MOON

Out on the farthest fringes of space, outside of any charted sector, a single green ship hovered over a barren moon—one of fifty that orbited the gas giant LCS-857-B. The moon itself probably had a number designation of its own, but for the life of him Cosmos could not remember it as, so far, he had only one number taking precedence in his mind:

    Zero.

Zero energon readings. Thirty-seven out of fifty moons so far had not a single ounce of energon. What were the odds the others would have any? He had no doubt the number would be the same.

Not for the first time he wondered why he was even doing this. The real answer, of course, was because Sentinel Prime had sent him out here. But why send him out all this way? The chances of some remote moon containing energon were so close to nil that it was a waste of energon to go through all this trouble.

Of course, there was no way in Pit he was going to say as much to Sentinel Prime; not unless he wanted a demotion. He supposed he should have just been grateful that he wasn’t under Zeta Prime’s command; the slightest indication of one’s dissatisfaction in their assignment earned you a permanent place in Garrus-9 for treason.

Knowing that there was no way he was going to get out of this, Cosmos set course for the next moon—which just had to be on the other side of the planet. As soon as Cosmos found the cosmic deity responsible for such an arrangement, he was going to seriously hurt them.

As he blasted across the gas giant’s hemisphere, his systems began to ping with energy readings. This surprised Cosmos; was there actually energon on one of these moons? Had he just picked the wrong side of the planet to start with? It wouldn’t be the first time his luck had turned out as such.

Still, he was eager to finally bring back some good news to the Orbital Command Hub. Kicking on his thrusters, he raced towards the moon…

…And found himself face-to-face with a Decepticon warship.

*  *  *

    “Anything yet?”

The green-plated Decepticon leaned over his console, yellow optics fixated on the scanner. “Nothing, captain. Not a single ship in sight.”

Skyquake scowled as he glared at the officer from his command seat. “Charger, you know that the last thing any of us wants is to turn back around and tell Overlord that we failed to capture a single Autobot ship. So when next I ask if there is something on the radar, do not even think to tell me there is absolutely nothing. Because there is something and we’re going to bring it back to him. Are we clear?”

Charger blinked before nodding. “Uh, y-yes, sir.”

“Good.” Skyquake leaned back in his seat, tapping his fingers on the arm rest. “Now then, keep searching. A ship as small as that couldn’t have gotten—”

“Um, sir?” A grey and blue Decepticon was looking back at him, green optics wide. “There’s something right in front of us.”

Skyquake launched from his seat. “There is?!” He squinted out the Darklon’s viewport, not seeing anything beyond the gas giant and its many moons. “Where is it?”

“Here, let me magnify the visual.” Take-Off pressed in a few controls and the visual scanners zoomed in on a small round spacecraft hovering in front of the warship. It was green and yellow, with a bold red insignia on the front curve of its bow.

“Uh…” Charger looked over to Skyquake. “That’s not who we’re after, is it?”

“No,” Skyquake grunted. “But it’s a start. Activate the tractor beam.”

*  *  *

Oh hell, was all Cosmos could think as he was dragged towards the warship against his will, caught within its tractor beam. This is not good.

His mind raced. He thought about sending an alert to the Hub, but could already tell that they had blocked his frequencies. This day was just getting better and better…

What were Decepticons even doing all the way out here? The LCS system was so far from Decepticon space that they couldn’t have possibly known of its existence, especially considering it had only been discovered by Astroscope’s team half a year ago. Did their reach extend far further than the Autobots’ had been led to believe?

Cosmos figured he would get his answers soon enough as he was pulled closer and closer towards the ship. Or maybe not; for all he knew they could just be planning on killing him as soon as they got their hands on him.

Up ahead, a port slid open. Bathed in red light were two Eradicon troopers awaiting him as the tractor beam brought him closer to his certain doom….

Suddenly, there was a flash of lasers and an explosion rocked the warship, knocking out the tractor beam. Freed from its pull, Cosmos quickly zipped away as a light-sized craft emerged from behind one of the moons, charging at the warship with guns ablaze….

*  *  *

“There he is! Fire!”

Skyquake hadn’t even finished his command before the Darklon’s guns were alive with fire. The Autobot ship zigzagged as it evaded the purple lasers, returning fire with red-colored pellets of its own. The warship shook under the assault as the smaller craft shot over the bridge.

“Activate the tractor beam!” Skyquake roared, gripping the sides of his command chair.

“We can’t!” Charger replied. “It’s already been taken out!”

“Then deploy the Eradicons! Fire all weapons! Do something!” Skyquake gritted his teeth. “We are not leaving until that ship is in our grasp. That is final.”

“Yes, sir!” the bridge crew echoed back before quickly getting to work.

*  *  *

Cosmos cried out as he flew at full speed, the Autobot craft and flying Eradicons close on his tail.

The Eradicons he could understand… but the Autobot ship? What did they want with him? They could have easily just let him jump back to the Hub like he was going to; why come after him and just further complicate the situation?

It didn’t add up. Unless these guys weren’t Autobots….

He became even more panicked as the ship began to close in on him. Before he knew it, it was already on top of him and he was soon being dragged in by a magnetic force. Unable to do anything but cry for mercy, Cosmos did exactly that.

“Please don’t hurt me!” he exclaimed before the airlock had even sealed shut. “I didn’t do anything! I was just doing my job! I didn’t want any of this to happen! Please don’t—”

“Primus, calm down,” muttered the red and gray Autobot, releasing his magnetic hold on Cosmos. “We’re only rescuing you.”

“Rescuing me?” Cosmos transformed from his ship form, arms and legs unfurling from his saucer bits while his red head emerged from the central base. “Is chasing after me your idea of rescuing me?”

“You were getting away from us.”

“Yeah, because you were chasing me!”

The bot sighed in exasperation, running a hand down his face. “Whatever. Just sit tight while Prime gets things sorted out. Name’s Windcharger, by the way.”

“Cosmos.” The spacer tilted his head. “Did you say Prime? You’re commanded by a Prime?”

“Yeah.” Windcharger glanced at him. “Something wrong?”

“Not at all, it’s just… I thought all the Primes were accounted for. Sentinel’s at the Hub, Rodimus at Athenia, Override at Velocitron…” Cosmos then blanched in dread. “Oh god, you’re not under Zeta Prime, are you?”

Windcharger snorted. “No, thank spark. Come on, he’s waiting for you up front.”

“Oh, he? Because I was just going to say Nova Prime.” Cosmos rubbed his head as he followed Windcharger to the front of the ship, where three other bots were waiting. “I’ll admit, I’m not that up to speed on my Primes. I’ve only just gotten all my Magnuses down. ‘Course, there’s only been five of them….”

Ignoring him, Windcharger looked up to a stocky gray bot with a wide orange chest, who was piloting the ship. “Is he still out there?” the red Autobot asked.

“Yup,” the pilot grunted. “Always gotta make a show out of it.”

“He did say we had to make this look convincing,” said an orange-plated bot with a single blue optic taking up her face. “If we made it too easy for them, they’d be suspicious.”

“It’s sound thinking,” commented a blue-colored mech. “Still crazy, but sound.”

“Well, Skids, sometimes, crazy works.”

All five bots turned to see a small robot jump down into the ship from a port above. He was red and black with a blue helmet that made his identity unmistakable to Cosmos.

“By the AllSpark,” he murmured. “You’re… you’re—”

“The name’s Optimus Prime,” the bot answered. “And if you have any desire to continue functioning, then you’re going to do exactly what I say.”

II: A MOST PECULIAR WAY

“Sir, we have them.”

Skyquake sighed in relief as he slumped back into his command chair. Outside the Darklon’s viewport, the Autobot ship floated lifelessly in space, damaged and out of fuel.

“Finally,” the Seeker muttered. “Is our tractor beam back in operation?”

“No, sir,” Charger replied. “However, I can have the Eradicons drag it in physically.”

“Make it so.” Skyquake allowed a small grin to break his otherwise stoic features. “They won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.”

*  *  *

“I’m sorry, Optimus Prime, sir, but, ah… did I hear you correctly? Did you say we’re going to let the Decepticons capture us?”

“Bang, got it in one,” Optimus Prime replied, pointing a finger-gun at a flabbergasted Cosmos. “Ready the hatch, will you, Roller?”

“You got it, big guy,” replied the burly pilot bot.

Cosmos looked between the two bots in confusion. Windcharger and the other two were unfazed by the exchange, instead focusing their attention on prepping their weapons and gadgets. Cosmos then looked back to see Optimus Prime vanish into a nearby hatch.

“…I don’t understand,” Cosmos murmured.

“Hey, don’t worry about it,” Windcharger said, slapping him on the back. “Just stick with me and you’ll be fine. Trust me.”

“Trust you? I hardly know you!”

“We’re both Autobots, aren’t we?” Windcharger pointed at the red symbol on Cosmos’ shoulder before pointing at his own on his chest. “Besides, we’re all led by Optimus Prime, so shouldn’t that be enough?”

“Optimus Prime’s been missing for fifty years! How do I know that’s really him?” Cosmos looked back at where the Prime had vanished. “I mean, he’s a lot smaller than the history records make him out to be….”

“He recently downsized himself to preserve energon,” said the orange monoeyed bot. “Also to better utilize TNM—”

“Glitch!” the blue bot called Skids hissed. “Rule one of TNM: Don’t talk about TNM.”

“Oh, right. Sorry.”

Cosmos frowned. “What’s TNM?”

Skids glared at him. “What did I just say?”

Windcharger waved him off as he turned back to Cosmos. “It’s just a little trick Prime likes to pull off from time to time, especially in scenarios like this one.”

“All right, Eradicons are closing in,” Roller called out. “Hope you guys are ready.”

Skids smirked as he produced a large gun. “More than.”

Cosmos’ visor went wide. “What the—? I thought we were letting ourselves get captured!”

“We are,” Glitch said.

“Then what’s with the guns?!”

“Didn’t say we were gonna make it easy for them.”

As Cosmos blabbered in incomprehension, Windcharger hooked an arm around his. “Stick with me, yeah?”

Cosmos looked to him in utter bafflement just as Roller slammed a fist down on the console. A port opened and all four bots were sucked out into the void of space.

*  *  *

“What the bloody hell are they doing?!”

Take-Off winced as Skyquake tightened his grip over his shoulder. Leaning over the Decepticon’s station, Skyquake scowled as he watched the four Autobots pour out of their ship, shooting at the Eradicons. According to Take-Off’s energy scanner, there were still two more on board.

“They just don’t give up, do they?” he growled. “Target the turbolasers on them. They shouldn’t be hard to pick off.”

“Sir?” Charger looked to him with a quizzical look. “But… doesn’t Gigatron want them alive?”

“He only wants Prime. He didn’t say anything about the others.” Skyquake pointed to the Autobot craft. “Send more Eradicons to bring that in. Prime is sure to still be on—”

“Uh, sir?” Take-Off said weakly. “There’s a… something coming towards us.”

Skyquake blinked as he saw the object in question. It was roughly the size of a heavy-type bot, with gray armor over… was that hair? No, it seemed to cover its entire frame, making it fur. What was Prime doing with an organic creature? And one that could breathe in space, at that?

Before Skyquake could come up with a reasonable explanation, the gorilla had smashed through the viewport and everything and everyone on the bridge was being sucked out into space.

*  *  *

“Oh my god, was that a gorilla?!”

Cosmos heard Glitch cackle over the inter-com as she disabled an Eradicon with her bare claws. “Truck Not Monkey! Never gets old.”

“Of course, monkeys and gorillas are two different things,” Skids supplanted, blowing another ‘Con’s head to pieces with his gun.

Glitch rolled her single optic. “Oh spark, don’t even start with me, wise aft. That’s what Optimus calls it so you shouldn’t even complain.”

“I wasn’t complaining! I was just pointing something out!”

“Ooh, look at me!” Glitch held up a disabled Eradicon, using it as some sort of puppet. “I’m Skids the Theoretician! I’m smart and I know stuff! Let me bore you to death with all of the stuff I know!”

Skids scowled. “Now you’re making me sound like Perceptor.”

“Because you do! You so totally do. I’m amazed you guys aren’t, like, besties or something. Or maybe it’s because you two are so similar that you can’t stand to be in the same room together.”

“That’s not— What are you even trying to say?”

As the pair continued to bicker, Cosmos was pulled away from the action by Windcharger, who had the green space magnetically fused to him back to back. The two of them were brought closer to the Darklon, hovering just above the hangar bay.

“Okay, here’s what I need you to do,” Windcharger murmured to Cosmos. “Once I detach you, transform—”

“You’re going to detach me?!” Cosmos cried. “I thought you wanted me to trust you!”

“Don’t worry, it won’t be for long!” Windcharger assured him. “I just need you to transform and fly into the hangar.”

“But there are ‘Cons in there! They’ll kill me!”

“You’ll be fine. Trust me, okay?”

Every part of Cosmos wanted to scream as he was detached from Windcharger. Against his better judgment, he did exactly as he was told, transforming and flying into the hangar….

Where he was immediately disabled by an Eradicon with a stun gun. Losing all control, Cosmos came crashing down….

*  *  *

The green jet roared as it blasted back towards the now-open bridge of the Darklon. Ignoring Take-Off and Charger as they floated past him, Skyquake set his visuals on the armored gorilla rampaging across the ship, waving a black gun around.

That gun… Skyquake would recognize it anywhere. It was the ion rifle, signature weapon of Optimus Prime (after the axe, of course). Had Prime really given his trademark gun to a mindless ape? Or….

No. Skyquake mentally shook his head. That was ridiculous. He was a fool for even thinking it. There was no possible way….

But then the gorilla turned to him and it grinned, an expression which carried to its eyes. To anyone else, that wouldn’t have meant anything. But Skyquake had seen those eyes before; it had been over a century ago, but he remembered the Battle of Technahar well. It had been the first time he had ever faced Optimus Prime in combat.

Those eyes, that grin… they were the exact same. He would recognize them anywhere.

Optimus Prime… was wearing a gorilla suit.

As the jet struggled to process this, the gorilla raised his gun and fired it at Skyquake. The Seeker quickly dodged the blast before advancing at full speed, unloading on the primate. The ape fell just as Skyquake finally reached the bridge, transforming to claim his victory.

Grabbing a hold of the gorilla’s chest, Skyquake tore away the armor plating, revealing an unconscious Optimus Prime within. A savage grin cracked onto Skyquake’s face as he seized the Autobot and lifted him out of the suit.

“Oh, payback feels so good,” he chuckled. “A pity Gigatron wants you alive. This would have been the opportunity of a lifetime, to finally have your head on my wall.”

“Sir?” Charger’s voice crackled through his comm. “Ah, it seems that the Autobots have been dealt with.”

“Dead?” Skyquake asked.

“Seems like it, sir. No sign of them or their ship—and they couldn’t have jumped to hyperspace.”

“Then the Eradicons have done their job… just as we have.” Skyquake grinned at the unresponsive Optimus in his grasp. “Return to the bridge so I can enable the emergency blast shield. It’s time for us to leave.”

III:

Lightyears away on the hellish world of Lucifer, Lord High Governor Straxus of the Decepticon Empire was bored.

This was never a good sign. Usually he was enthralled with the cries of terror that rang across the halls of Darkmount, delighting in the smell of molten slag that came from the smelting pools. Today, he was supremely, imperiously bored.

Perhaps it was the fact that all they had been smelting lately were second-rate Autobot grunts and empties. Nothing substantial like a Major or a Prime or a—dare he dream—Magnus. These nobodies were so easily scared it wasn’t even funny—anymore, at least.

He didn’t understand why this was. When Gigatron was around, it was nonstop fun 24/7. From impromptu chases to mock arena fights, there was simply no end to the entertainment. But now, as he watched the generic, no-name Autobot writhe helplessly on the ground, he just felt… nothing.

Others, on the other hand…

“Oh yeah!” The slate-colored Decepticon jet pumped his fists in the air as he and his magenta partner stood over the hapless Autobot. “We are not to be messed with!”

Straxus did not resist rolling his optics. These Decepticons were as green as one got; they’d never set foot on a real battlefield before let alone faced off with a real Autobot. Gigatron considered these shows as training exercises, but Straxus found them useless. If Gigatron really wanted to train them, then he should throw them into the smelting pools and have them try to climb out. That would yield real results.

But no. Clearly Gigatron saw something in these novices. Straxus simply could not share that view.

“So what do ya say, Wingblazer?” asked the magenta ‘Con as he shoved a spear into the Autobot’s back, getting him to spasm. “Shall we take him to the pool now or save him for later?”

The slate one grinned wickedly. “How about we take him to Stalker? I wanna see how long he can withstand the endoscopic claw.”

“Please,” the Autobot sputtered out. “H-have mercy….”

“Oh! He said the M-word!” Wingblazer looked excitedly to Straxus, who was resting his head on his hand. “You know what that means, boss!”

Steam exuded from Straxus’ vents as he sighed. “What does it mean, Wingblast?”

“You get to say the thing!” said the magenta one. He stepped off of the Autobot and presented them to Straxus. “He’s all yours, boss. You’ve got your axe, right?”

“Uh…” Straxus fumbled around on his throne, retrieving his pickaxe from behind him. “Yeah, I do.”

“Say it again, Autobot,” the magenta ‘Con jeered, pinning the Autobot’s arms behind his back. “Say the M-word.”

The Autobot blinked, confusion mixed in with his terror. “Uh… have mercy?”

Joints creaked as Straxus rose from his throne. He winced as a piece of armor plating fell off, followed by a back panel. Metal groaned as he lifted up his axe, his pistons threatening to lock up. The grins on the Decepticons’ faces never once faltered while the Autobot regarded Straxus with more bemusement than fear.

“Mercy is not dispensed here, fools,” Straxus muttered, raising the axe over his head. “Only death.”

Then, with one swing of his axe, he eviscerated both the Autobot and the Decepticon that held him. Wingblaze stepped back in horror, his green optics wide.

“J—Jetflame…?” he murmured, gazing upon his friend’s remains.

“Aw, geez,” Straxus grunted, realizing what he had done but not at all giving a crap. “I’m sorry about that. Here, let me fix it.”

He then raised his axe again and brought it down upon Wingblaze, ending him as well. With that done, Straxus collapsed back onto his throne, exhausted from the two actions. He then shifted his attention to a pair of Eradicons standing nearby.

“Clean this up, will you?” he barked. “Why do you think I keep you around?”

Without hesitated, the Eradicons moved over to the three corpses. As they got to work, the doors opened to allow a scarlet Decepticon jet into the throne room. He stopped briefly to regard the dead bodies before directing his attention to Straxus.

“My lord,” Snare said. “Skyquake has returned.”

Straxus nodded. “Good.” He then blinked as he rubbed his helm. “Wait, who?”

“Skyquake,” Snare replied. “Commander of the 92nd Predator Corps of the Decepticon Air Force. Conquered the Skomiloch Territories last meta-cycle.”

“Not ringing a bell,” Straxus muttered.

“Tall and green with wings….”

“Nope.”

Snare sighed. “He made fun of your poetry.”

“Oh yeah!” Straxus snapped his fingers. “Now I remember! Is he here, then?”

“Yes, he’s waiting outside.”

“Bring him in then!”

Snare bowed before taking his leave. In his place strode in a tall Decepticon in green and silver, red stripes decorating his wings. Upon seeing Straxus, Skyquake took pause as he lifted an optic ridge.

“You’re… sitting in Gigatron’s chair,” the Predator commander said.

“Eh?” Straxus took a moment to figure out Skyquake’s meaning before laughing. “Oh, yeah. He’s gone for the orbital cycle. Meeting with the other ‘Trons at a summit on New Kaon.”

“I see.” Skyquake’s frown deepened. “And he left you in charge?”

“Yup! Great, isn’t it?”

Skyquake scowled. “But, I’m his right-hand!”

“Yeah, but you weren’t around and someone had to be left in charge.” Straxus leaned back in his seat and folded his hands over his wide chest, smirking smugly. “You snooze, you lose, as they say.”

Skyquake glared at him before sniffing, holding his head up high. “No matter. I have made an accomplishment far more important than some throne.”

Straxus grunted. “Yeah? What’s that?”

“I have captured Optimus Prime.”

Straxus was silent at first as he stared at Skyquake. Then, he threw his head back and laughed.

He laughed for a very long time, smacking his arm rest as he keeled over, clutching his side. Soon his laughs turned into wheezes before finally breaking into a coughing fit, gears grinding together as he struggled to compose himself. Once he had gotten a grip, he straightened back up and looked back at Skyquake.

Then he fell over laughing again.

“Something tells me you’re not taking this seriously,” Skyquake muttered.

“Oh man.” Straxus continued to chortle as he sat back up. “I’ve always wondered why Gigatron kept you around. Now I know: Every ruler needs a court jester.”

“I’m being serious, Straxus!” Skyquake snapped. “I’ve captured the one and only Optimus Prime! You don’t believe me?”

“That’s an understatement. Seriously, man, I’m gonna die here.”

“Fine,” Skyquake growled before raising his comm. “Bring him in.”

The doors opened again and a squad of Eradicons marched in, towing an upraised stasis pod behind them. Inside the pod was a small Autobot in red and black with a blue—and very familiar—helmet. Straxus studied the imprisoned bot for a moment before turning back to a smirking Skyquake.

“Are you high or something?”

Skyquake sputtered in confusion. “What?! No! This is—this is Optimus Prime! The one and only!”

“Uh-huh. And I’m the Prima-Vectorum.” Straxus shook his head as he gestured at the small bot. “Come on, man. That ain’t Optimus Prime. Optimus Prime is big, red and blue. That… that is almost the complete opposite. And I should know; I once fought against him.”

“So did I,” Skyquake retorted. “Believe me, I know this is Prime. It might not look it, but I know it for a fact.”

“If that’s the case, then maybe Stalker should give you a psyche exam or something.” Glancing back at the Eradicons, Straxus motioned with his hand. “Put him with the others. We can still play with him later.”

“No!” Skyquake exclaimed as Not-Optimus was wheeled out of the room. “You don’t know what you’re doing! You’re making a huge mistake!”

“Fat jokes won’t salvage your reputation, Skyquake,” Straxus grunted. “Now get outta here. Time for the next show to start.”

IV:

Cosmos’ systems took their time in booting back up as he was greeted with the sound of bickering.

“That one was mine.”

“We can’t have you shooting that BFG of yours in here. You’ll set off every alarm on this ship.”

“Skyquake and his crew have already left. All that’s left are Eradicons.”

“He’ll still be alerted! Unless you want to go swimming in the smelting pools.”

“Quiet, you guys,” came Windcharger’s voice. “I’ve found him. Glitch, can you disable this ray shield?”

Cosmos raised his head in time to see the ray shield of his cell dissipate. Standing there were Skids, Glitch, and Windcharger. The latter waved at him.

“Hey, buddy! You’re not hurt or anything, are you?”

“No,” Cosmos muttered, rubbing his helm as he stood up. “How… how did you guys get here?”

“Windcharger magnetically fused us to the ship’s underside,” Skids said. “Fortunately, they didn’t jump to warp speed. Otherwise….”

“Hey, I knew Lucifer was just a system over!” Windcharger said defensively. “They wouldn’t waste a jump over such a short trip.”

“I’m sorry, Lucifer?” Cosmos asked.

“Its proper designation is LU-5-4,” Skids said. “Well, short-term proper. Its full designation—”

“Oh my god, nobody cares,” Glitch said. “Let’s just regroup with Roller and get moving.”

With haste, the four Autobots began moving through the Darklon, heading for the hangar bay. Cosmos looked around as they dodged patrolling Eradicons, noticing the absence of a sixth of their number.

“Uh, where’s Optimus Prime?”

Glitch broke into a giggle fit. “Probably monkeying around.”

Skids rolled his optics. “Primus spare me….”

Windcharger shook his head before looking over at Cosmos. “He’ll be around. He’s doing his part of the plan, we’re doing ours.”

“And… what is your plan?” Cosmos asked.

“To break into Darkmount and free the prisoners.”

There was a long silence after Windcharger had said this. Cosmos stared at him before blinking once.

“No, but seriously.”

Windcharger frowned. “What? That’s the plan.”

“You’re joking, right?” Cosmos said. “You—you do know that Darkmount is, like, the ultimate Decepticon fortress, right?”

“Actually, that’d be Kolkular,” said Skids. “Granted, Darkmount is up there….”

“Either way, I can’t be the only one who finds the words ‘break into Darkmount’ to be synonymous with ‘certain death.’”

“Hey, it’s only certain if you don’t do things right.” Windcharger gave Cosmos a thumbs up. “Relax. Just follow our lead and everything will be fine.”

Cosmos groaned. “If I had any money, I would so totally bet against that….”

*  *  *

“Uh… where did he say to put him?”

“Who cares?” the Eradicon soldier grunted, tossing the stasis pod containing Optimus Prime to the floor, joining the ranks of a dozen others. “It’s not like anyone keeps this place organized.”

“Point taken,” said the other trooper. “Say, is it break time yet?”

“Dunno. Is TX-552 back from his yet?”

The two Eradicons continued talking as they exited the storage cell, closing and locking the door behind them. Once their footsteps had faded away, a pair of legs kicked open the stasis pod as Optimus Prime climbed out of the capsule, rubbing his battered helm.

“Boy, that Skyquake guy really doesn’t like me,” he muttered.

“An understatement beyond measure,” replied a muffled voice. Reaching behind himself, Optimus detached a small jet from his back, which instantly transformed into a small bot.

“No lie, I totally forgot you existed, Hi-Q,” Optimus said to the Mini-Con. “Why so quiet?”

“I’ve just been analyzing the probability of success for your plan,” Hi-Q replied.

“Ah, cool.”

“Chances of success are, at present, 1,984 to one.”

“That’s an oddly specific number,” Optimus said. “I won’t ask if that’s good or not.”

“Just as well. You wouldn’t like the answer, anyway.”

Standing to full height, Optimus looked around the room they were in. There were dozens of stasis pods but only a few were occupied. This was probably where the ‘Cons got their “playthings”—a reserve of Autobots to torture once they were done with their current target.

It disgusted him… but not as much as High Command’s complete and utter lack of action.

They knew these Autobots were being kept here, yet had Ultra Magnus sent anyone to Darkmount to rescue them? Nope; everyone was too busy defending worlds like Earth or Nebulos to care for their own people. It sickened him to the very laser core….

“Optimus?” Hi-Q was frowning at him. “Are you all right?”

“I’m fine,” Optimus lied. Shaking his bitter musings, he began to peruse the pods, peering into each capsule. Hi-Q floated after him, continuing to frown as he watched his larger partner.

“Aren’t you going to free them?” he asked.

“Not yet,” Optimus replied. “If I freed just any average bot, I would just be granting them an early death. No, if this plan is gonna work, we need someone big. Someone like Roller or Impactor or—”

He stopped as he looked behind one of the empty capsules. There, buried in the back, was a capsule larger than any other, containing a bot befitting its size.

“Grimlock.”

“I’m sorry, did you say the G-name?” Hi-Q asked. “I thought he died during the war.”

“He went missing after the Battle of Omnitron,” Optimus muttered, pushing aside the pods to reveal the stasis-held Dinobot. “We all thought the same but there were rumors that he had somehow survived.”

He took a step back to study the imprisoned Dinobot. While the face and build were undoubtedly Grimlock, the colors were different. Gone was the gold chest, replaced with an obsidian breastplate with red cracks seeping through. His gray armor was also changed to crimson while his red visor was now tinted green.

It was Grimlock, mos certainly. But… some things had changed. Optimus only wondered if the changes were more than just cosmetic.

“Right then,” he murmured. “Let’s get this open.”

“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Hi-Q asked. “I’ve never met him, of course, but I’ve heard Grimlock can be… unfriendly when disturbed from slumber.”

“Relax, he and I go way back,” Optimus said as he worked the pod’s controls. “Sure, he might be a bit grumpy at times, but once you get to know him, he can be a real—”

Without warning, the capsule burst open and Optimus was sent flying across the room, crashing into a pile of empty pods. As Hi-Q looked on in alarm, Grimlock lumbered out of his prison, green visor flashing with rage.

Optimus laughed as he thrust out an arm, giving the Dinobot a thumbs up. “Ha! Still got it, Grim! That was a good one.”

Grimlock simply snared as he crouched down, planting his palms on the ground as his back kibble began to unfurl, assuming the shape of a dinosaur’s head.

“Whoa now, not so fast.” Optimus scrambled to his feet. “We’ve gotta plan first, buddy. Do you even know where you are? You can’t just—”

Green optics glowed to life as the dinosaur head fell over Grimlock’s own. The resulting tyrannosaurus then growled lowly as it set its gaze on Optimus.

“…You’re not listening to me, are you?”

An earsplitting roar was his only response as the Dinobot came charging forward….

*  *  *

“Hey, did you hear that?”

The one Eradicon stopped to look at the other. “Hear what?”

His partner gestured down the corridor. “It sounded like it came from—”

Up ahead, a door went flying off its hinges as a red and black beast came raging out. The Eradicons immediately raised their guns as one held a hand to their comm.

“This is TX-959 to all available units! We have a breakout on Sector G-86! Repeat: Breakout on—”

The trooper was drowned out by the Dinobot’s roar as it charged towards the Eradicons, opening its maw to bring forth their fiery end.

V:

“Please tell me that’s part of the plan.”

Windcharger did not meet Cosmos’ pleading gaze as he listened to the wailing alarms ringing throughout the fortress. “No, I don’t think it is…” he murmured.

The five of them were pressed against the outer wall, hiding in the shadows as Eradicons rushed past them into the fortress. Regardless of whether or not it was part of the plan, it nonetheless provided a useful distraction.

“All right,” Roller grunted, hefting his gun. “Let’s split up. Windcharger, lift Skids and Glitch up to the top. Cosmos, you can fly up there as well.”

“Oh joy,” the green Autobot whined. “Oh joy oh joy oh—”

“Once you’re up there, find the controls to the smelting pools and switch them off. Meanwhile, Windcharger and I will go to the cells and help Prime out.”

Windcharger nodded. “Sounds good.”

“Sounds good?!” Cosmos stared at him incredulously. “Sounds good?! Don’t you guys watch movies? Splitting up the gang is like the worst thing you can possibly do!”

Roller glanced at him. “Well then, Mr. Strategist, do you have any alternative suggestions?”

“Yeah, here’s one: Stick together and don’t do something rash and suicidal.”

Glitch looked down and counted on her claws. “That’s… that’s two suggestions.”

Ignoring her, Windcharger stepped up and rested a hand on Cosmos’ shoulder. The green Autobot was beginning to get sick of these empty gestures.

“Look, I understand this all may seem intimidating, but just—”

“Just what?” Cosmos snapped. “Just trust you? That’s what I’ve been doing all this time and look where it’s gotten me!”

“Not so loud,” Roller hissed, glancing back at the Eradicons marching into the fortress. “Look, we don’t have time to argue this any further. Prime’s counting on us. Windcharger, get Skids and Glitch up there.”

Without question, the red Autobot got to work. As he lifted Skids and Glitch up with his magnet powers, Cosmos let out a weary sigh.

“I take it I’m the only one with a survival drive then.”

Windcharger smiled weakly at him. “Sorry, buddy. Just stick close to Skids and Glitch. They’ve got your back.”

“Do they?” Cosmos cast a doubtful glance upwards. “So far it seems like they’d love nothing more than to tear each other’s sparks out.’

“That’s just their thing,” Roller said. “They’ll keep you safe, don’t worry.”

“We’ll see about that,” Cosmos murmured as he transformed and followed the pair up the fortress wall.

*  *  *

“Man, will someone turn that alarm off?”

Skyquake frowned as he gave Straxus an annoyed glance. “Aren’t you the least bit concerned—”

“Of course I am!” Straxus snapped. “I’m concerned that I’m going to miss my nap!”

Growling in irritation, Skyquake directed his attention to Snare, standing dutifully as he awaited orders. “Alert Falcon. Have him take a squad of Predators to Sector G. Also, tell security to put the entire fortress on lockdown so that no one leaves.”

Snare saluted before running off to carry out his orders. Skyquake then turned back to see Straxus rising from his throne.

“Are you going to join them?” asked a surprised and hopeful Skyquake.

“No,” Straxus mumbled, waddling past the Seeker. “I’m going to my quarters. It’s sound proof there so the alarms won’t bother me.”

Skyquake could only cover his face with his hand as the Lord High Governor trodded away.

*  *  *

“Would you like to hear the current probability of success for the plan?”

“Hi-Q, the plan just took a suicidal nosedive out a 100-story window,” Optimus Prime grunted as he ran after the rampaging Grimlock. “Such as it was.”

“I suppose you’re right,” Hi-Q murmured, attached to Prime’s back once more. “So what’s the new plan, if you have one?”

“Tame Grimlock is as far as I’ve gotten.”

“Ah. I can give you an estimate on the probability of—”

“Please don’t,” Optimus said. “I really don’t need that right now.”

Following the sounds of death and destruction, Optimus turned the corner to find Grimlock entangled with a detachment of Decepticons, consisting of Eradicons and Predator jets. The Dinobot roared as he impaled a trooper with his tail before chomping down on an advancing Predator, hurling the both of them to the side.

Under normal circumstances, Optimus would have considered this move to be awesome. It still was, of course. But if he had any hope in taming the wild Dinobot, it was now or never; the awesomeness would have to wait.

“Grimlock!” he hollered. “Think happy thoughts!”

The Dinobot whirled to him, green eyes blazing with hate.

“Happy thoughts, Grim! Think about… think about pretty girls! And cute animals! And cupcakes! You like cupcakes, don’t you?”

Grimlock answered with a deafening roar as he barreled towards the Autobot commander.

“I’ll… take that as a no.” Metal feet screeched against the steel floor as Optimus turned around and began to run like hell.

*  *  *

In spite of all his apprehensions over the present operation, Cosmos had to admit that watching Skids in action was immensely entertaining.

The three of them had just turned a corner in the direction of the smelting pools only to come face to face with a squad of Eradicons. Without warning, Skids was immediately in motion, taking out one trooper with his gun while using his arm-mounted blasters to take down a second just as a pair of shoulder cannons finished off the third and fourth. He didn’t even need his gun emplacements on his shoulder wheels as the fifth had already ended himself by stupidly tripping over his comrade’s corpse and discharging his blaster in his face.

Weapons still smoking, Skids looked over to Glitch. “Did you…?”

“I’ve been teaching myself to use my powers remotely,” she replied. “The Professor did say they would evolve over time.”

“God, you’re scary,” Skids muttered. “Next you’ll be talking people to death or something.”

“That was so awesome,” Cosmos murmured despite himself. “Are you… are you an ex-Wrecker or something? A Warrior Elite? A Phase Sixer?”

Skids rolled his optics. “I’m a theoretician.”

“Is there a word for someone who somehow manages to act humble and haughty at the same time?” Glitch asked. “’Cos that’s what I’d call you. Or at least a vulgar twist of it.”

“Let’s just go,” Skids grunted, turning back around.

They continued their way down the hallway, managing to avoid any more conflicts with Decepticons. The further they went, the closer Cosmos could tell they were getting to their destination… because it was beginning to get rather warm.

“We’re getting close,” Skids said quietly, gun at the ready. “Be ready for anything.”

Up ahead was an open doorway, where two Eradicons stood before a chamber bathed in orange. Before Skids could say anything, Glitch disabled the both of them with a wave of her hands. As the guards crumpled lifelessly to the floor, Skids shot her a disapproving look.

“What?” Glitch snapped. “Practice makes perfect. Besides, you’re the one to talk, Mr. Walking War Machine.”

Skids simply shook his head as he led the other two the rest of the way to the open entrance. Upon entering, they came onto a wide balcony that oversaw the smelting pool… and what a sight it was.

Oil-curdling screams echoed out from melted corpses attempting in vain to climb to freedom, only to be pushed back down by cackling Decepticons. On hovering platforms, tow-cables dipped Autobots down into the lava only to pull them back out before repeating the process. Their screams were just as if not more harrowing than the others.

Cosmos began to feel himself shake. He had heard tales of the Decepticons’ brutality, of course, but he had always thought they were exaggerated. But now that he was seeing it first hand… he felt as if his spark were about to give out.

A hand fell on his shoulder and at first he thought it was Skids or Glitch trying to comfort him. But then he looked up and saw the Decepticon’s face just as the doors slammed shut behind them.

“Looks enticing, doesn’t it?” the orange jet said, brandishing a three-pronged trident. “Don’t worry; there’s plenty of room.”
